Write first, then find a beat?

Write first, then find a beat?

Postby Tomer666 » Mar 18th, '13, 16:45

Hey, I'm just wondering what is the proper way to rap, first write the lyrics and then find a beat to fit it or the other way around?
I know there is not really a "proper" way, just what way do you think is better?
Does anyone have an idea what way do famous rappers use? (Famous and actually good, I mean)

If you write first, it'll be harder to find a beat that fits, and if you do, you probably will have to change some lyrics here and there and maybe the flow you had before the beat. This is if you don't make a beat yourself.

I like to think the beat sets the tone for how, and what you rap to it.

If you know the basics of rhythm you should be very capable of writing without a beat and rapping it perfectly to a beat.

I find the beat first normally, but I've done it the other way around before many times.

I can see it both ways but to me the beat dictates my mood, tone, everything really.

I prefer to hear the beat and then write the verse so it rides the beat to a T.

It can be possible the other way, but I'd rather fit my lyrics to fit the beat, then search and search for a beat to match the lyrics and shit. Less hassle and more productive, IMO.

i write first just as a concept. if the beat works, i use it. if the beat doesnt work, i edit the lyrics a little bit.

This.

Even if I write to a beat, I'll often be able to change the beat and still be able to flow it fine.

But, writing to a beat will help you to reach that level.

There are benefits to both. Writing without a beat gives you clarity for concepts, On a beat inspires melodies, flow etc..
I like to switch it up every once and a while to reap the benefits of both worlds.
Solace has the right idea. I can put anything on any beat, even if it was written without, but not without the sacrifice of some change.

Change can mean something better
