??

What??

As a mechanical engineering student, I am very familiar with the metric system, and very proficient with it. However my statement still stands - American's cannot handle the metric system, and that is evident in that we have not adopted the metric system, and the majority of Americans are not proficient with it.

I'm afraid your efforts in creating an account were a waste.

your right the "majority" of americans.
Only because it wasn't taught at a young age.
But I can bet most Americans can't tell you how many feet are in a mile either.
What field are you going into as a mechanical engineer?

@SWA -- Yeah. I have been lurking here since Relapse. Now that was 09, so a few years ago, maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I remember a lot of people not liking the content/accents. When Recovery dropped, most people were super into it. It felt more like Eminem's real comeback than Relapse. Flash forward to 2013, Relapse is considered one of his greatest albums period, and Encore >>> Recovery or Recovery barely >>> Encore.

I don't know why that happens. Or how it happens. My opinion has never changed on an album for me. From any artist. Once I absorb it, and feel what it makes me feel, that's it.

I hope, whatever the majority reaction is to this album that it stays that way. It's consistent.

Lets be honest, people don't want to admit that their opinion is so heavily swayed by others. Or maybe they just don't realize it and I'm being cynical idk. It also could be a case of "not aging well" which I know is a case made for Recovery. I thought Recovery was great. Still think it's a great album. Not without flaws, but objectively speaking away from Standards (see what I did there?) it's a solid album.

I must admit I brushed Relapse aside at first. It was before I went on this site though. I just wasn't crazy about it. Then one day, after letting it sit for a while...I decided to give it a chance since I was overplaying the rest of my Em music. When I put the attention into it and got past my first grievances I fell in love with it. If I would have listened to all of the hate I probably never would have given it another chance. Lesson learned.

My initial reaction to Relapse was a very positive and excitable one. But that was almost all because Em had been away for so long. Well, that and technically it was superb. But after a few weeks -- it's not that I liked it less, it's just the novelty wore off, and it became, for me, a very niche album. It is almost entirely dark, save for Beautiful and a few silly songs.

Recovery on the other hand, my initial reaction never changed. I loved it. Where some may see it as "inconsistent," I see it as versatile. I always felt there were two schools of Eminem fans. The ones who lean towards his violent, crazy, raw songs. The SSLP/MMLP crowd if you will. And the Eminem Show/8 Mile crowd that lean more towards personal, real, motivational songs.

I feel I'm in the latter, although I can appreciate his horror stuff for what it is.

And I think Eminem has this issue himself at times. Because he's so versatile, he's not sure if he should stick to one kind of feeling on an album, or be all over the place. As some have mentioned, his first three off this album sound nothing alike.

There really is in many ways an internal struggle between Eminem and Shady if you will.

I was kidding when I made that statement, it just seemed comedic at the time.

But, it is also evident in this thread - considering nobody understood his joke about the ~12 Kilometers = 8 miles, and the fact that the person that made the joke had to use a google calculator to do the conversion.

Most Americans do not understand the Metric system, and if it were to be forced upon the nation tomorrow, it would cause chaos. And yes, it is because it is not taught to us at a young age.

Don't go off on me telling me I'm ignorant though, it's more about America as a nation being ignorant to it. Personally, I favor the metric system and wish we did go off of it, but that will not happen.

I think most could. It's just one of those facts you learn as a kid that sticks with you.

On this subject, I think it was either President Carter or Reagan who tried to push the metric system in schools, but they just weren't having it.

Not only do I not know the metric system, but I have a very limited understanding of the measurement system in this country. I know inches, feet, and yards. I know 12 inches is in a foot, three feet are in a yard. Outside of that, I'm done. I have no grasp on ounces, cups, gallons, etc.

My goal is to stimulate, making you high
And take you and I
To a place you can't see
But I believe you can fly
I don't mean nobody harm, I'm just partying
I'm not your dad, not your mom, not your guardian
Just a man who's on the mic
So let me entertain you...

I think Americans are as smart as any one in the world. but their reputation got ruined when Bush became president. People thought, you had to be very stupid to vote for a very stupid president, Whoes only skill is dodging flying shoes. Awesome fella. I miss him.

I think it was President Ford that pushed the Metric System. He actually signed a bill which made the Metric System mandatory in trade/business, however in our personal lives we are free to choose whichever system we want, and the American population I feel will never fully convert.

I think most Americans would be able to tell you that there are 5,280 feet in a mile, like the previous poster said.. it's just one of those facts you are taught that stick with you.
