Yeah the lyrics are night and day. At his best during his fucked up phase, he was a "pretty good" rapper. At his worst....he was embarrassing. Now at his best he shits on most rappers, and at his worst he's still better than a lot of rappers today.

I have to disagree. The flock of radio lovers will feel that way but real fans know real shit. That feeling you got at 11 from SSLP, the vicarious chill of really enjoying something dark, could not be replicated by Recovery. I'm no Recovery hater, but it doesn't have that dark intangible. The thing is too, people are judging MMLP2 RIGHT NOW, when even Berzerk has only been out 2 months. It takes time for things to settle in and get an authentic opinion, IE Rap God. I don't believe in 1 year everyone will be squirting over it anymore

I don't know. Fans can evolve with the artist. Or their tastes can change. Yeah, the dark edgy stuff was cool when I was 12, 13, because I felt like a rebel listening to adult material.

By the time Eminem Show/8 Mile came along, and he started making songs like Lose Yourself and SFTM, my tastes changed. I think Eminem is at his best when he writes songs like that. Songs that transcend the genre.

I hated a considerable amount of Relapse and loved all of Recovery.

I was there from the beginning. I was a fan the first time I heard My Name Is, but I'm 25 now.

Dark stuff doesn't do it for me anymore. The bulk of his catalog is that. I want songs and content that make use of his skills as a songwriter and not so much a lyricist.

He doesn't need to be the same.. It's not even me wanting to hear him be the same.. I just wanna hear good music. MMLP/TES had it all. It wasn't "oh but the lyrics" it was "oh but the whole song".. No excuses his flows are hit and miss, the punch lines are getting cheesier as they go, and his ear for beats is fucked completely. Hoping for a better album than 50% still.

punchlines aside, he's also got this double and triple entendre shit going on now, his rhymes were pretty basic back on his classics, but it was his charisma that shone through on them, he's certainly had growth in his rap skills.. admittedly, recovery and bme had some heavy reliance on weak punchlines, but as stans we should know his headspace back then, lacking in confidence, due to the relapse bashing made him wanna immitate the likes of lil wayne, who he deemed as the shit at the time.. but now i think rapgod proves he's moved on from that period

i totally agree on the ear for beats. i mean what the fuck? the production on this album is shaping up to be bad based on these 4 songs we have. he does not fit on these beats at all.

I can agree with some of this.. Technically is he honed the fuck in?? YES. But lyrically it's still not quite magic to me. Rap God was a good sign of things to come. He stunted on us with a good assortment of flows, inflections and delivery in general.. I expect some gritty ass raps though..
