I'd say I was like blue collar. A lot of people liked me. :)

That is the question I've always asked myself
I don't think popularity matters as long as you're happy. It's just when it turns negative.

Very true and well said.

Why do people have the desire to be popular?

Essentially its just ego feeding and the feeling of being loved.

Doesn't popularity come into play when it comes down to competition or defence?
Being picked for the sports team? But that goes down to performance it's not personal, as a teenager you don't often think outside the box and only see the harsh side of that and take it personally. Prom king or queen? Usually goes down to a sports person, not someone that did something for others. That then becomes the responsibility of the adult in charge of that decision being stereotypical or following suit.
Being a prefect? They usually pick geeks/nerds or someone with the most friends?
Is popularity fed through our brains at school the wrong way so we are brought up to think about it the wrong way? That's a question.

It does boil down to happiness though.
Why do you listen to the music you listen to? Because it makes you happy
Would you change what you listened to based on popularity? No
But would you lie about your choices or change your views or opinions (on anything not just music) if they're not popular?

We are not brought up to be individuals for some reason and everything surrounded by us tells us we are ugly, or not as good as this person, so people's brains are being fed to be the best, be the prettiest - not a bad thing to better yourself, but theirs a line when it comes to changing yourself.

I don't have the answers myself... But I would have been categorised popular in school because I was good at sports, captain for most teams, I was liked and I liked a lot of different people and I had friends in all circles. I didn't have my own group, I was just me and a part of the variety of groups.

Kind of. People knew me and I knew people from all type of different groups, chilled with people I liked, whether they were "rejects" (damn cold word) or not.

Basically I never cared about the popular kids because I didnt like their mentality but yeah. I never tried to be popular anyway.

I'd be interested to know what drives "popularity" now...

Popularity is driven by social media status nowadays isn't it?

My first years I wasn't that popular. Generally stuck to one group of friends and I would have the odd couple of friends that where sort of popular. Around my junior year is when I started to associate with everyone and by my senior year I was a guy that associated with a lot of unpopular kids and a lot of popular kids. I produced/recorded/starred in the schools news/comedy/skit show and through that gained more friends and recognition :y:

On Wax's Podcast a while back asked the same thing; if social media played a part in popularity in present day High Schools or not... Anyone?

I follow this page on twitter that posts funny 30 second video clips, linked through from vine most of the time - On the basis of those videos... I would say it now plays a huge part.

Did you see UK programme Hesk, The Secret Life of Students on channel 4?
I found that interesting
There was some douche on there that lived for popularity on social media and people knew him before he got to uni because of his twitter and then had to live up to that whilst he was there
Same for another girl on there, spent more time tweeting (she's done over 20k tweets, that's 100 a day) and caring about social attendance over attending her lectures :confusion:

Definitely. Not as blatantly, but having 0 likes on your profile pictures is usually a sign that you're a loser nowadays.
