Reviewing Nas as an artist if he had never put out Illmatic?

Postby Jaba » Nov 18th, '14, 00:54

Nas is one of the best rappers of all time, many say he IS the best. Illmatic is also said to be one of the best albums of all time. This being said. How would you rank Nas as an artist if he had put out all of his albums EXCEPT Illmatic? Would he still be in the "goat" discussion or no? Do you feel he'd be average? Discuss in detail (why?).

Singin' "Bagpipes from Baghdad" again
In my dad's drag draggin' a faggot in a Glad bag
Won't be the last time I make a dramatic entrance like that again
You thought I was lyin' when I said I think that I'm crossin' the line again
I've lost my mind, caution oh God I think I've just thought of another fucking line
Forgive me father, for I have sinned
But hip hop has left me brainwashed with a violent streak

It was written is enough to place him on the goat platform.

Acting like Illmatic is the only exceptional album he's put out

I love that album. But I didnt think it (along with other Nas albums besides Illmatic) got any love?

Miller wrote:It's impossible to even guess what would have happened. His life would've been totally different if he never put out Illmatic. Every song he wrote after that was the Nas that wrote Illmatic so he would literally be a different person. Different connections, different hype, different everything.

This is true too. You can't play hypothetical games and say "oh well if this didn't happen, would this have happened?" Shit doesn't work like that

Nas would still be my favourite rapper if It Was Written was his debut

Nas doesn't rest on the laurels of one album, he has a 20 year long career at the top of the genre

Well...It Was Written would be definitely called a classic if people didn't have Illmatic to compare it to...

There's an intruder... in my house
He cut my phone line
... can't dial out
I scream for police
... but I doubt
They're gonna hear me
... when I shout
