When you BATTLE someone then you take Rapper A and Rapper B and let them spit however many verses or songs and then a large group of people decides who won the battle. Even in a beef between 2 low profile rappers it may end up being brought down to lyrics to determine who won since neither has a career.

However when you're talking about the hip hop elite it's NOT the same. For example some would say Canibus beat Eminem lyrically in their beef. But who's sold 70+ million records? Eminem and 50 DID end Ja Rules career. Dude was a multi platinum artist with a strong label behind him, but what happened? 50 came up and erased his credibility and Eminem and crew came up behind him and were able to beat down his image enough that no one wanted to be a Ja Rule fan.

When it comes to high profile rap beefs it's all about damaging your opponent's reputation and image. Meaning you want to draw as many people away from them as you possibly can. You want to be seen as the clear victor. How do you do that? You make them as irrelevant as you possibly can, so people look back and say "oh Ja was doin ok til 50 and company pulled his skirt up and killed him." or "Prodigy was still aight until Jay released that Takeover track and burried him."

It's all about image. That's why anyone can say LL won the beef with Canibus. Canibus fucked LL the fuck up lyrically, but Canibus still has no career. Joe Budden won his beef with Game, but Game has a career. Being a rapper is about more than lyrics. Image, longevity, and your ability to bounce back play a vital role and they have to be taken into consideration when you're talking about rap beefs.

And Nas image was called into question when Jay made several valid points about him being a complete hypocrite with his lyrics and people just siding with him cuz he spit that "deep" shit. And Jay's career didn't go down because he was too big.
