Now, I'll start this post by just stating I love Recovery. So despite my criticism of Em's decision here, I'm not criticising the result from his actions. Just the principle in his actions.
Okay so, in 2009 when he came back, Em said that on the first two albums it felt like he just did completely what he wanted. And thought 'fuck what everybody else thinks' and he was happy doing it that way. So he said that was his aim with Relapse and R2, his return, to just be himself and do what he wants and fuck what everybody says. And if people don't like what he does then he won't care.
Yet, immediately after some mixed reactions on Relapse and his new style / content, he immediately scraps that theme, denounces the album and does exactly what he thinks the fans / other people want. I'm not saying he doesn't like Recovery. But man, talk about contradiction. He stated something with pure conviction then totally went against it immediately.
He cares too much what his fans think. A true artist should do what they want and what they want only. At all times. If the current fans don't like what you're doing then fuck it, you'll make new fans. Because if they don't like it and you (as an artist) do then those fans are no longer in the same mind as you about what you do. So it's not right you try please them anyway. That's just as bad as trying to water down your content to please people who dislike you to begin with.
So once again, Recovery is a great album but he totally went against his principles by listening to exactly what people said and changing himself drastically based off of that. Despite stating this is the exact thing he wanted not to do.
