At one point he was the biggest rapper in the US.
If DMX ain't mainstream because he's not that well known outside of the US, then neither is the likes of Jay-Z who's biggest efforts overseas before he became Mr.Knowles (as 50 likes to call him) were almost irrelevant.
DMX had big #1 movies too with the likes of Jet Li, Steven Segal etc. He was the lead actor for many of these movies too.
