Apples and oranges. Kendrick told the story within the album. Literally painted the picture within the lyrics. Gambino elaborated on the emotions and thematic elements, while throwing in little details from the overall story (the screenplay). They're both impressive, but I think Gambino took it a step further by writing a 72 page screenplay + acting the character out + making a great/cohesive album. GKMC is a concept album, whereas BTI is a concept hailing from all these different views and angles (album, screenplay, interviews, CFTWR, etc).
I don't think Gambino fell short at all. He put in work, and has an impressive body of work to show for it.
