Well now that you bring up GKMC I'd say the fact that he needs a screenplay to properly convey the story, where as Kendrick didn't, is where he falls short

Apples and oranges. Kendrick told the story within the album. Literally painted the picture within the lyrics. Gambino elaborated on the emotions and thematic elements, while throwing in little details from the overall story (the screenplay). They're both impressive, but I think Gambino took it a step further by writing a 72 page screenplay + acting the character out + making a great/cohesive album. GKMC is a concept album, whereas BTI is a concept hailing from all these different views and angles (album, screenplay, interviews, CFTWR, etc).

I don't think Gambino fell short at all. He put in work, and has an impressive body of work to show for it.

the screenplay doesn't add anything to the album, it makes the experience better for the fans and gives him an advantage to add whatever he wants to an album after it's done.

People will always rate an album and not its promotion, GRODT (the movie) doesn't make the album any better, kanye long ass videos for MBDTF don't make the album better,..

Undun (The Roots) & Wolf (Tyler) are 2 other "concept" albums that tell a story and the albums don't need a screenplay to be cohesive

Yeah, the intricacies of the details. Doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the album one bit if you didn't read the screenplay. Or from the overall theme of the songs. You'll just be like "oohhhh, that phrase makes sense now" and you'll see how much work he put into this concept.

If you enjoy concept albums then you should also listen to The Roots - Undun & Lupe Fiasco - The Cool, I don't know if you'll enjoy them as much as BTI but these albums are amazing imo

You are saying that the screenplay helped paint the picture, fair enough. But the script has nothing to do with the music itself except the story maybe. Even after reading the script I feel like it's a decent album. Not bad not great either.
