Jay-Z - Magna Carta Holy Grail (New Album: July 4th)

Postby EminemBase » Jun 17th, '13, 04:39

Seems like he's tryna be a bit like Kanye with the minimalism, 'arty / religious title' and Rick Rubin.

Getting a bit sick of Jay and 'Ye trying to prove they're artists purely through things like mentioning the names of... well known artists in their raps and aimlessly comparing themselves to them etc. with no basis aside from the fact they want to be seen as artists, and those people were... lol.

If you wanna be an artist - make some art. Don't just keep talking about art or the art you apparently make, without actually making it... a lot of rappers now just keep talking about things they never do "I'm PIcasso, I make this / that". when all they do is make the song that says they do.

Come up with some concepts, be daring. Stop thinking some cool docu-style recordings of you recording your shit and slow-mos as you mention Picasso make you a genius.

'Ye was far from disappointing for me, but that's another story. I doubt Eminem will disappoint, and those beats previewed in that video are really enjoyable to me. Has Jay dropped any singles? Is he also going the Kanye route and not releasing any singles/videos?

I think so yeah @ Kanye route...

You can get the album free if you download the Samsung app which is available on June 24th... I don't know if that's a free physical copy or digital though, I would presume digital... in which case, people can get that shit free anyway lmao, but, still a step in the right direction marketing-wise.

Combined with what Kanye did and now what it looks Jay is doing... and combined with the independent successes of like Macklemore and Mac Miller... the labels may be shitting themselves. If they're not they should be, as artists are proving they truly don't need them or big budgets to sell.

Samsung bought a million copies for the Samsung s4 which makes it the first album to go platinum without pre orders and without being released.

Genius.

The instumentation sounds ridiculous. Will definetly check this one out.
I like the new routes that these rappers are taking. Droping albums like if they were mixtapes. Interesting.

Jay is even "less" of an "artist" than Kanye, since all jay is really doing is mimicking Kanye.

True that.

Jay bites and mimicks a lot... but I particularly noticed him doing it with Kanye ever since he's been affiliated with him. Kanye even touched on that on "Big Brother"...

""I told Jay I did a song with Coldplay
Next thing I know he got a song with Coldplay
Back in my mind I'm like "Damn, no way""

And then Jay released it before Kanye could release his album...

A lot of people defend his bitten lines throughout his career as paying homage, but the fact he did that to Kanye and is clearly mimicking him here seems to suggest that actually, he bites.

He's a business man, he bites what works and is successful. The man is a money making genius. Praise lord Hov.

Yeah he's a hustler, not an artist.

Kanye genuinely sees himself as a Picasso, Jay sees himself as a billionaire.

Yeah but treating music that way is kind of lame...

Innovators are respectable, biters ain't.

You wanna praise someone who basis what he does on what others do which 'works'?

That's a pretty lame thing to do artistically. Good in business, but lame in art.
