Rah for the catchy songs? You're kidding right? I thought you said before fuck catchy hooks and songs. And to my memory Ra has only made about 5 catchy songs in his career.
My definition of "catchy" is not the same as the pop-chart definition. Catchy as in the songs that just posses my mind for a while, that i can play again and again.
His effortless ease of flow, complex mataphors and lyrical flair is what he's great for, catchy is not in his satchel of talents (At least not in comparison with most artists).
as i said i didnt mean it in the same way as u described.
Well, what you said there really showed that you haven't listened to Canibus much. I didn't mean aggressive as in "pulling out spinal cords from backs, and making constant battle tracks", I just mean in the delivery, the flow, beat and intonation of the lyrics.
His intonation is exactly what didnt appeal to me in the first place.
And Canibus raps about technology and science and makes them metaphor's for his rap skills, and he spits them in sometimes 7 or 12 minute long songs with a rapid flow.
Its not the size of the tracks that matters, its how well they are concepted and executed.
Rakim and Mf Doom always stick with the same delivery and flow, never getting passionate or excited about what they're saying.
Rakim - know the ledge, pass the hand grenade, the punisher, casualties of war... then theres relax with pep, stay a while, 18th letter, ... Ra has flipped almost all kinds of songs well, he doesnt get as low as doing self indulgent comedy tracks .. it prolly wont suit his image... other than that he did had delivered in all styles, many of those styles prolly originated whit him too lol, since he was a great influence.
Maybe that's because they don't touch on heavy shit, just clever wordplay and rhyme wizardry.
What do u mean by heavy shit? screaming every word on a record? ..
But, it's the whole sound of it, the very laid back flows, beats and delivery that make it a little boring. And hell yes that is a strong word, and I don't mean it as strong as it sounds, but I can't think of a word better to suit what i`m tryin to say.
As far as doom goes, he uses beats that suit concept, Some albums have musical themes, some have deliberately abstract beats for atmosphere.... its called art. As i said, just coz the beats are laidback ... does not make it boring. And no not all of them are laidback, "venomous villain", "vaudeville villain" albums were fast paced and angrier and more passionate in sound than the rest.
