No, to begin with it helped. But it's not relevant to say that now, the novelty has worn right off.

It'd be like saying Tiger Woods gets more attention because he's black. Not true. It's because he's the best.

Otherwise we'd be hearing much more fuss being made out of Asher Roth, Paul Wall and other white rappers too.

I think that's what he means. He got a slight push in the beginning because of his color. After that it was entirely what he was doing and his music that made him as popular.
