Actually this is a rumour but not an unfounded one.

Mark Whalberg said in an interview with Whoo Kid (video is floating around) not too long ago, I think in 2009 actually, saw it myself - That Mat Damon was supposed to be co-starring as his brother but pulled out.

He then said they might ring Eminem to do it. Then spoke about why Em would be good because there's only so many people who could believably play his brother. Saying they need somebody who's hard an actual hard life etc.

So looks like Eminem was a very close choice at one point but now looks like they've gone with Bale.
