upi.com Wrote:NEW YORK, Jan. 19 (UPI) - New York animal welfare officials responded to a woman's cry for help, removing 25 cats and 10 kittens
from her one-bedroom apartment.
Agents who went to Kima Graham's home in Brooklyn said it was different from those of most animal hoarders, the New York Post reported Tuesday. The apartment was neat and clean, although full of cats and the animals seemed well-fed and well cared for.
"The goal is to stop the problem," said Tim Rickey of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "She clearly cares about these animals. If the situation is let go, six months from now, we could see over 100 cats. The numbers just skyrocket as they continue to breed. It's a situation she recognized was out of control."
Graham bought a kitten five years ago and then took in another cat she found on the street. The two animals eventually got together as did their offspring.
All her neighbors have been given kittens over the years, Graham said. Food for the ones she could not give away was becoming too expensive.
Two male cats will be returned to Graham after surgery to ensure their days of fatherhood are over, agents said. In the meantime, she is having trouble adjusting.
"It's so quiet. I'm not used to this quietness," she said. "It's weird for me not to have them now. New homes are better than the street."
