Ice Cube - overrated?

Postby MikeNUFC » Feb 3rd, '10, 20:58

Now, I have always liked NWA, and it was a year or so ago when a friend of mine said you need to check out Ice Cube's solo stuff. I had already heard some of his singles so I decided to download The Predator and AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted.

Was hugely dissapointed. His rhymes were basic and boring, in my opinion. Nice delivery but his flow is mechanic and all the tracks had a similar meaning. Apart from 'Today Was A Good Day' there was not ONE track I actaully enjoyed on both albums.

Is there something I'm missing about him? Becuase I had heard so much good things about his solo stuff I thought I would really get into him.

Do you lot like him?

I don't think so, he wrote alot of N.W.A's lyrics and Eazy E's solo stuff, plus he released a few classic albums
''It Was A Good Day'' is my favorite hip hop track ever too :worship:

I can see why people don't like him though
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified

How can someone be top 5 when you don't wright your own shit. Eazy never wrote his own lyrics so how could he be top 5. Maybe to you but for me no. If you don't wright your own shit you shouldn't be in any type of list.

When I checked out Death Certificate it was quite disappointing actually so I haven't really checked much of his other music after that. I realised since then that I didn't tend to like West Coast hip hop that much at all.

The way you're saying it, there must be 10000 great rappers out there if Ice Cube is one of the most overrated.

There's not that many great rappers out there with legendary status, and Ice Cube is easily one the elite. If he didn't rhyme, a lot of what's done today would not have occurred. He had the balls and intelligence to do what he did, and pave the way for millions out there.

Why is Ice Cube amongst the elite, towards the very top of the list?

- Wrote 90% of NWA's rhymes - including the entire 'Straight Outta Compton' album which changed not only Hip Hop, but the music industry. Most would admit then that Hip Hop needed not only something amazing but something eye-catching if it was to ever catch the attention of mainstream America....and NWA did that. Ice Cube was the man behind the lyrics.

- Wrote Eazy E's early lyrics - this includes game changing and everlasting tracks like 'BoyzNtheHood'.

- Practically an Independent, after leaving NWA he released 4 albums with almost no outside buzz and support in 4 years that went platinum - never EVER been done since by any rap artist to release consecutive albums in consecutive years that went platinum. Try doing that today.

- Elevated others around him - that is the black people of the West Coast and rap groups such as Public Enemy. Formed his own group that also went platinum. Starred in a movie that will forever be a classic depicting life in that era and area - BoyzNtheHood.

- Took a 6 year hiatus, longer than Eminem, came back more "out of the game" then Eminem on an Independent and no buzz or promotion and went gold.

- At the end of the day, he had 4 solo classic albums back to back which is almost impossible and was responsible for the words of the most influential rap group/artists of all time and the original voice behind the biggest family tree in music history - that now includes artists like Eminem.

No contest - one of the greatest of all time. Top 5 Dead or Alive, without doubt.
The New York Times - "Lloyd Banks may have stealthily become the most important rapper in New York".

Aight.
I didn't even read 10% of the shit you wrote because to me he is one of the most overrated rappers ever. Just the way I feel...

Plus he's made a shitload of crappy movies which doesn't exactly make me like him more....

Peace.

Ice Cube overrated? No..if anything hes underrated..

On the the most influential people in hip-hop, many fans love NWA and conisder them one of the best groups ever, and he wrote all their shit..and AmeriKKKa Most Wanted is from 1990, so of course the lyrics are gonna be simple..

And if it wasnt for Cube and NWA nobody would be doing "gangsta rap" they pioneered it..and I saw somebody said they dont like West Coast hip-hop..without the West Coast rap wouldnt be half of what it is today..

Dr. Dre
Snoop Dogg
Ice Cube
Eazy E
Tupac (even though hes a New Yorker)
Spice 1
The D.O.C.
Ice-T
Warren G
Cypress Hill
MC Eiht
Too Short
The Game

Now picture what hip-hop would be without them..and how many "classic" albums they have produced..

I'm not talking about pioneers or whatever, I'm talking about straight rap - how good they are at rapping. Nothing to do with what they produced, pionnered or who they ghostwrote for.

What, in your view, are his "4 solo vclassic albums"?

Ok well the way he rapped made tons of emcees want to rap just like him, take his concepts, his style n all that..so obviously his rapping skills influenced other to model the way they rap around it..to me thats better than a bunch of multis, metaphors or abstract vocab and what not..Ice Cube is a living legend, hate it or love it

Sure they helped change rap

It still doesn't change the face that west coast rap sounds like shit to me (besides a few new west coast rappers)

Ok well without Dre theres no Eminem, 50..without Ice Cube there's no NWA albums, without Snoop Dogg theres no DoggyStyle, without D.O.C. there is no "Dr. Dre - The Chronic"..without Tupac half of the rappers today wouldnt be shit not to mention his classics and the word 'Thug' would still be a bad thing..

You take out the West Coast and hip-hop would be just a shell of itself
