Based on ticket sales this is far behind gone with the wind domestically. Based on inflated prices, gone with the wind would have raked in 1.5 BILLION...in the US...alone

So if you take that into account, it's only the number 21 movie all-time in US box office history, thank the USA Today for that little bit of knowledge.

yeah i was thinking the same thing... of course avatar beat out titanic considering that movie tickets in 1997 were probably $5 at most, and now, when avatar is out movie tickets are more than $10. measuring a movie based on revenue is stupid... and CG graphics are overrated. and the story line is Pocahontas, but with blue people instead of native americans.

I don't think it's overrated, I think it's bad for film making. Now film makers are going to start thinking more business wise than art wise, seeing how it's possible for a bad film to make billions as long as it's loaded with special effects.
Look at the last 4 or 5 years: The Departed, There will be Blood, Wall-e, Slumdog Millionaire, etc.
All awesome movies without going overboard with special effects.

the departed is just a remake and it's ending is so damned hollywood and not needed which idiot cutted that shit in?


but I think avatar is a great movie and don't mock too much about the plot - can you make up new original and all-fresh-new plots with interesting hints?
it's not that easy, trust me. in the end it's always more or less the same espacially if something comes up from hollywood you can retell the movie before you've seen it

but except the part that an invader fell in love with a native it's a great movie and it deserved to be successfull for all the work and art

Funny thing is they only spent 200 million something dollars on it. Its brought in 10-11 times that just in box office. Who knows in other merch and then dvd sales on top of that. probably close to 3 billion
