Tom Cruise to make a new Mission: Impossible movie

Tom Cruise is to make a new Mission: Impossible movie with Paramount Pictures, four years after a high profile split with the Hollywood studio. The actor's 14-year relationship with Paramount ended unceremoniously in 2006 when Sumner Redstone, chairman of Paramount's parent company Viacom, accused him of committing "creative suicide".

Cruise had seen his popularity wane after erratic public behaviour including an incident in which he jumped on Oprah Winfrey's sofa proclaiming his love for actress Katie Holmes, now his wife. He also faced a backlash over his staunch defence of his beliefs in Scientology.However, his career has continued to prosper and he will co-produce the fourth film in the series, in addition to starring as special agent Ethan Hunt.

Mission: Impossible IV will be released next year. Paramount Pictures chairman Brad Grey said Cruise, 47, was a "great talent" and the studio was "excited" to be working with him.

The three previous Mission: Impossible films grossed $1.4 billion (£840 million) for Paramount.
