Yes to have a stable career i think a degree is necessary, and yes a bachelors value is depreciating... now many jobs require masters and doctorates degrees
I think u can get a job with a High School Diploma but itll be hard to find a career with the salary and benefits needed to make a living

Having a stable career is monotonous.

You can get so much more out of life by not wasting it in college.

Your view is slanted.

Your personal decision was to choose the path of blue collar work. Carpentry. That's a fine profession, but not one that would require a degree. You also seem to have a negative view of higher education, based on some of your posts. So perhaps you feel that they are not, but exactly how you've come to this conclusion doesn't apply to many people. While you don't need a degree to carry out your career--a respectable career, nonetheless--others certainly do.

To answer the question, it depends on what you want to do. Do you want to be a doctor? Then yes, of course. To practice law, again, you need a degree. To teach classes in schools, you need to have a degree. A degree is certainly an advantage, even in careers that do not require it. You can certainly work in the medical field without one--CNA's do not require one--but it would be advantageous for you to get one if you're wanting to advance to become an RN.

The technology field does not require a degree in many cases. Certifications are valued above everything but experience; however, a degree is, once again, advantageous. If nothing else, it shows the ability to follow through, and a good working knowledge of the material you learned.

I enjoy college. I don't consider that a waste.

Reality is subjective, anyway. Not exactly an argument that is properly stated with two sentences.

Why do you have such a negative view of college?

Yes Abram, degrees are necessary to be a doctor or a lawyer or something of the sort, but that's not the question.
The inquiry pertains to our current world.
Particularly in the U.S., we're starting to feel the youth bulge effect. I feel the only way to counter it is by encouraging and promoting class diversification.
In order to build our caste system so to speak, we must drastically reduce the amount of young adults both attending college and performing unskilled labor, and slowly increase our population of skilled laborers.

School is a painful subject for me Abram. It's hard to explain.

Ah, excellent argument.

In that respect, then I see what you mean. I'm not condemning blue collar work by any means. I find it freeing in many respects. I just personally can't trust it well enough for sustenance in the future. In my area, it's my understanding that we've been in a recession for nearly twenty years. Seeing the effects of this economic sinkhole, I wanted to find something I could at very least fall back on. That was part of my decision in attending college.

However, I also enjoy going. There are times that I don't particularly want to, but overall, I find it to be rewarding. I'd like to be able to make a living doing something I like even more than computers, but I understand that it may not be a practical option.

Anyway, more power to you. :y:

Nope. You waste more money going in uni/college and coming out with debt then you do just by having a job :y: Plus i also think that most people who don't go college have an idea of what the 'real world' is about before most college students do.

It depends what path you want to take.

There's usually an unfair bias towards yes from people who think they're educated and / or intelligent because most people want to work for somebody else. If you want to work in a field of academics or a company of which you need to move up through to sustain or improve success then yes it's adamant you have one.

But someone like myself, I've known from... As young as I can remember I'm going to work for myself. That's why I never took any of it seriously and it's never had any worth to me. I've no interest in working for somebody else and having to answer to other people for my lunch money.

So for people like me who take the root of self-employment and... You know, I mean aside from just running my own business I'm going to take other creative ventures etc. and I don't require qualifications for any of it.

Formatted government education takes the art out of learning. It's been lost for a very long time. Learning should be an adventure not a mundane task. So there is no sense (to me) in paying other people to teach me about something I love, which they're probably half as passionate about... Teaching me only the bits they deem important and in the way they deem most effective.

I'll have much more of a blast on a journey of self-fulfilling education myself and my scope is limitless. I don't have to learn X by said time or prove I know it by doing X, Y and Z. Instead, I can totally ravish the topic I love, rip it apart, tear it inside out, do it to death. Take as long as I like, or not, move onto to other elements. It's much more of adventure and I feel I learn a lot, lot more than I ever would in University / College.

Well in fact I know that I do as I have friends in University and know more about most of them on the topics they're actually taking there. Difference is, I love learning about it because the methods I employ are free and enjoyable. There's aren't. And they're limited. So they learn less.
