I agree he's humorous but saying funny stuff isn't a punchline per say

he needs to get clever like back near Infinite but I mean tbh, punches are the least of his worries

You're right, raising his daughter is more important.

Yeah but that's why his new 'lines' aren't punchlines.

He doesn't suck at punchlines he just intentionally or maybe inadvertently left punchlines behind as he evolved since they're associated with battle-rapping and he grew out of that.

It's not like he's trying to do a punchline by saying he's gonna chop somebody up and failing at it. He's just not doing a punchline.

But when he actually tries them, he's the best.

"You know you're spaced the fuck out like George Lucas, when your puke is, turning to yellow as orange mucas / So when I grab a pencil and squeeze it between fingers, I'm not a rapper, I'm a deamon who speaks English / A freak genius"

Also, all his Infinite punchlines and some SSLP and MMLP ones are just on another level.

But then he changed his style constantly and made it more about emotion and the passion he was putting into it instead of how clever the lines were. He grew in his lyricism. Which is what 99% don't ever do.

....there's like 1 half ass punch there bro (space out/Lucas)

I'm talking about a punchline as in something clever not edgy, classical form punchlines

Lmao @ people thinking that is a punchline. :facepalm2

Yeah I know the rest after the Lucas line wasn't a punchline but I just love that whole sentence so kept typing lmao.

But the Lucas line isn't half-ass, it's a full blown metaphor.

You obviously don't need me to post all the infamous ones from Infinite but when he bothers to write them he's untouchable. One of my favourite:

"I'll run your brain around the block to jog your fucking memory"

But he has loads throughout his career and more subtle but more poetically ironic ones on the later albums. People just often miss them because he blends them in with less obvious punchline lyricism.

But like I said - He left that behind as he evolved.

But seems like he's gone back to it on R2 from insider hype anyway so we can hope. Mr. Porter said one track is like The Hip-Hop Shop days.

spaced out like George Lucas is even worse than...i'm so high i can eat a star lol

but I don't even care about punchlines when i listen to Eminem. He puts words together like no other and thats his strenth imo. Take all the Undeground nonsense with "jacking off to a hockey mask at a boxing match", "the fuckin antichrist is back Danny its satan in black satin panties", "now she's pregnant and gay missing both legs and begging to stay" , and "medic this headache's awful this anesthetic's pathetic so's this diabetic waffle and this prosthetic arm keeps crushing my hard taco"
I love that kinda shit and as someone who's into rhyming, Relapse was some classic shit. As a musical album, its terrible, but I appreciate it on another level.

Anyone remember hearing that the first track of R2 was supposed to be a sequel to Underground?

I definitely saw that punchline fire start sparking up again after all these years on that track. I can't wait to hear a sequel.

yet eminem himself said Underground was about going back to the hip-hop shop days, & none of the punch lines or lines in that song were good or clever. some of the lines were downright corny imo (despite the delivery being superb).

edit: reminder that most punch lines rap fans think are 'genius' are just simple double entendres. punch lines have become far too formulaic, predictable & weak.

No but Em expanded on that, Em said he was going back to the D12 / Underground days of saying the most fucked up shit he could think of for the sake of it and all that mattered was rhyming.

So he didn't say it was a return to punchline-rap.

But Kon Artis said on the new productions he brought that Em out because it was like they used to do on Infinite with the 1-2 punch. I expect much more creative lyricism from Em now that he's jumped off Dre's bland beats. New production I think will bring out many new sides and flourish his creativity.

Amadeo wrote:& i don't think em necessarily gave up on 'punch lines' post-MMLP. there were plenty clever lines on The Eminem Show & even Relapse, two of which are in my signature.

When I say punchlines in reference to rap music I'm talking about 1-2 punch, with irony and / or a metaphor at use.

Ie.
"You couldn't flip shit playing in toilets with a spatchula"
"I'll stop the alphabet at S and got it down to a T!"
"You could date a stick of dynamite and wouldn't go out with a bang"
"You couldn't make the fans throw up their hands if they swallowed their fingers"
Etc.

I don't just mean clever lines or sarcasm. That line in your footer from "Soldier" is just... Well it's not a punchline lmao, just him saying what he means, just telling you something. It's not a 'line'.

It's got a pay-off with his sarcasm, him exposing a certain side to himself but that's not what a punchline is.

Amadeo wrote:what do you mean? "You couldn't flip shit playing in toilets with a spatula" is a double entendre. he's highlighting both meanings of "flip shit." & that line in my signature from Soldier is a double entendre as well (highlighting the double meaning of the phrase "get me off"). the other line is also a double meaning

edit: just as an aside, the lame thing about those lines from Infinite is that some of the set-up lines were nonsensical (i think he rhymed "out with a bang" with "clout with a thang" or something?) & he sets up "you couldn't make the fans throw up their hands..." with the rhyme "fellow follower's singers." he essentially wastes an entire line for a clever line. from SSLP onwards, he lost this habit & learned to not waste a single line.

Yes but the spatula line, the point of the line is highlighting the double-meaning you couldn't do X with X, it's a 1-2 punch. Where as that line from "Soldier", it's not the same for one as he explains it. It only becomes a double-meaning when he says the literal line which takes out the punch and makes it literal.

He's just speaking clear and literal. It's sarcasm. "Gets me off... Like my lawyer, when the fucking judge lets me off". It's a very light double-meaning used as a set-up for a bit of brag-sarcasm, really not the same thing at all. It's not the point of the line and it's not a strict 1-2 with a strong double-meaning / use of irony. He's just giving another perspective on the phrase as a continum in real-time lmao.

And yes I agree some of the lines on Infinite were... Well not all though, he was very Nas-ish on there obviously so was trying to sound poetic etc. I don't think it's because he couldn't think of better lines as precussors, I think he was purposely rappping and writing lines like that.

But I'm not on about the 'other' lines anyway, I'm talking about the lines themselves. The punchlines themselves from Infinite are amazing.
