Favourite Hip-Hop Time Period?

Postby MikeNUFC » Mar 15th, '10, 20:13

Pretty simple. What's your favourite time period in hip hop music, for whatever reason?

It can be becuase of artists at the time, influences, classic albums, songs.. whatever you consider your favourite.

For me it's a hard choice between 1991-1996 & 1997-2001.

1991-96 contains two of my favourite rap albums ever in Illmatic and 36 Chambers (and Dare Iz A Darkside which is top 10 album for me) but 1997-2001 has more songs and new artists that I'm still listening to today. And in MMLP And Life After Death two classic albums. So I'd go for that.

Please give reasoning for your answer as well.

1991-1996 :worship: The amount of good albums which came out in this era is incredible. They do not feel so old school but they do not feel modern either. Their styles are incredible, Hip Hop was at it's peak, or so at least to me. The quality of these albums lyrically and production-wise is my favorite if I compare it to other eras. Even though I was born that era, searching through Hip Hop I have realised that most of my favorite albums fit within that time.

Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Illmatic
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...
The Infamous
Ready To Die
Me Against The World
Reasonable Doubt
The Chronic
Doggystyle
Hard To Earn
Midnight Marauders
Liquid Swords
etc..........

I know. But I still listen to rap from the 1980's (Run DMC etc) and enjoy it and I'm only 18. You dont have to be alive at the time to enjoy music from that period.

1997-2001

3 reasons:

- Marshall Mathers LP
- Country Grammar (sorry, but it brings back lots of nice memories)

91-96 by a mile for me, why? Wu Tang Clan's debut plus first round of solo's, Jay, Nas', B.I.G''s, and Big L's debuts, Outkast's 2 albums, G Rap's 2 albums, The Chronic & Doggystyle, Gangstarr's albums, Boot Camp Clik's first round of solo's, Pete Rock & Cl Smoth's albums, The Infamous, The Diary, Soul Food, Slaughthahouse, Soul On Ice, Redman's 3 albums, 2Pac's albums.......Shit looking at that list there was no genre competing with hip hop in that time period, and there's plenty of albums that I didnt mention
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified
