Rock and Roll Hall of Fame pickings get slim, after 25 years

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's new class -- ABBA, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, the Stooges and the Hollies -- is one of the most eclectic in its 25-year history. But these five acts, honored in a Monday night ceremony at New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel, have one thing in common: They had all been eligible for induction for more than a decade before making the final cut.

It clearly was a catch-up year for the hall, and it won't be the last. It's not like five incontestably qualified candidates become eligible every year. (Artists become eligible 25 years after their first recording is released.) Next year's list of newly eligible candidates, for instance, couldn't be more underwhelming: it's unlikely that the Indigo Girls, Megadeth and Faith No More will garner much support.

We'll never see a hall class like 1995's again; the Allman Brothers Band, Al Green, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and Frank Zappa entered that year. But amid all the padding, and the catching up, that is sure to come in the future, there are some worthy candidates. Here are a few (and the years that they will become eligible).

The E Street Band, 2012: Bruce Springsteen was inducted on his own in 1999. The E Street Band was first credited, on an album, on Springsteen's 1986 boxed set, "Live/1975""85." (So, the vote would be in late 2011; the induction ceremony in early 2012.) The group would enter the hall in the sideman category.

Guns N' Roses, 2012: It hasn't been a smooth ride, particularly in recent years. But the impact of 1987's "Appetite for Destruction" alone ensures the band's place in the hall.

Public Enemy, 2013: Unless prior nominees the Beastie Boys or L.L. Cool J make it all the way over the next couple of years, the politically outspoken, musically dynamic Public Enemy will become the hall's third hip-hop act (after Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and Run-DMC).

Nirvana, 2014: Arguably the most important rock band of the '90s, spearheading the grunge-rock revolution.

Phish, 2014: Below only one group, the Grateful Dead, in the jam-band pantheon.

Green Day, 2015: Volatile pop-punks who have ambitiously (and successfully) reinvented themselves with rock operas in recent years.

Pearl Jam, 2017: Initially in Nirvana's shadow but now acknowledged as a truly great band in its own right.

Radiohead, 2018: Daringly avant-garde but also hugely popular.

Dr. Dre, 2018: His success as a recording artist combined with his landmark production work should make him a shoo-in.

Jay-Z, 2021: This charismatic hip-hop hit machine is still going strong, 15 years into his career.

Other future candidates: Jane's Addiction (2013), Nine Inch Nails (2015), Garth Brooks (2015), Alice In Chains (2016), Mariah Carey (2016), Smashing Pumpkins (2016), Tupac Shakur (2017), Mary J. Blige (2018), Snoop Dogg (2019), the Dave Matthews Band (2019), the Notorious B.I.G. (2020), Oasis (2020), Justin Timberlake (2028).

Eminem (2022),

Currently eligible, could get in at some point: The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kiss, Whitney Houston, Bon Jovi, Yes, Rush, Neil Diamond, Chicago, Darlene Love, Tom Waits, Willie Nelson, the Smiths, the Cure, the Moody Blues, Alice Cooper, the Cars, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Frank Sinatra (as an early influence).

In as group members, but could make it as solo artists too: Lou Reed, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Steve Winwood.

Wow 2018 for Dre even though his been in the game since 1984 but i guess they're going by solo career. That would be a good early 50th birthday present for Em. :)

It's weird even picturing Em as 50.

It's like... 40/50, it doesn't even look that weird. Tarrantino and Brad Pitt are nearly there and they look normal.

But it just seems weird thinking of rappers that old lmao, I can't imagine Em looking 50, just seems odd. Probably because of the youthful image and clothing etc. Associated with it in my mind.

I think once Em is finally done solo he should move into acting but seriously. He could spend the next 20 years becoming one of the best actors ever and be a legend in two fields. That would be amazing and I think he could do it. Just as long as he put the same focus into that as he does this.

And he already loves creating characters etc. and he was great in 8 Mile. He has the right attitude about it too. The fact he's only done one film in this time and that was one he had input and creative influence on speaks volumes for his integrity about it all. I would like to see that as his next move.

Whatever you say eminembase, sounds good and would be interesting, as long as he makes time to accept the award in 2022
