Yeah...this is a bullshit marketing move. It's one they were bound to take, for sure, though. It's obviously a comparison the media will make, and it only makes sense for him to address it, getting his name in rotations is obviously a factor as well.
It's his answers themselves that seem desperate to me, however. He doesn't try to separate himself from Em. He doesn't say, "Yeah, he's good. My music holds up on it's own though--I'm a separate entity". Instead, he encourages the comparisons, and even seeks more attention by mentioning a (possible) future collaboration. Obviously, it would be terrible, and wouldn't happen. But beyond that, it's not like his signing to Interscope even makes it much more of a probability.
He's nothing too special. It's interesting that they've signed an artist with such a different voice, though. It makes me wonder whether or not the Northern California scene will continue to remain underground/independent forever.
