No I think it's ridiculous to think he'd place such a silly whim and point, on his fourth album. When he's so conscious of how precious legacy is and how right it is to give yourself piece by piece and make sure each piece is much different from the last.
I think The Eminem Show is still the peak of his talent. Well, that time period yeah. I mean, the 8 Mile Soundtrack... He could of made that into his next full solo for 2003. Made it half-concept, half-life true because rapping as Jimmy he fucking shined laser rays. Called it something like Jimmy Mathers or something more fitting but... You get the idea.
I do actually think "8 Mile Road" and "Rabbin Run" and "Lose Yourself" top a lot of the stuff on TES, lyrically and musically. Because it was for a soundtrack, he obviously felt he needed to make it all 'bigger' and worthy of being on a movie screen.
Just imagine if he was in that mindset for TES. Same songs, same concepts but lyrically and musically he has a movie ideology in terms of the sound and grandure. Man, it seems like a shame to have those three amazing songs on a soundtrack.
When I heard TES, I thought... This cannot be topped. But if he could of created a consistent album of the best of the soundtrack... He could of actually topped it. They feel so.. Huge, so significant and timeless. So familiar yet the most pure brand of originality.
SO, no I don't think he made Encore to piss of his fans. I think it's because he burned himself out with The Eminem Show, work on the movie, The 8 Mile Soundtrack. I mean he pretty much tore his head apart, dug in every little corner with the smallest spoon he could find and served as a very healthy lyrical meal.
I think maybe Encore was intended as deserts to the main show. That would make more sense. Not that I'm saying he would purposely create worse music or a crap album lmao.
But an Encore is the closer to the show but usually not the highest quality... I can't imagine him wanting to top The Eminem Show as an album, with that concept, when it's meant to be summing up things he missed on TES, tying loose ends etc.
I think he had the right idea slightly coming under the main show but there was also obviously... Lazy lyricism and artistic ambitions in there. Replaced with aimless wackiness pretending to be unique, golden comedy. I definitely think he hit the nail on the head making Encore more somber and serious.
Encore with the original tracks, minus the stupid singles... Still wouldn't of quite did it. But if he wasn't a pill head by that time which he was, if he hasn't burned himself, which he did... I think he could of made a perfect closing album. And started fresh with Relapse. Beautiful line of logic throughout his albums.
He just fucked up his perfect record by trying to please other people than himself on Encore. Trying to second-guess what 'most' of his fans would want, trying to give an even amount of each... Just, ended up mixed. But overall a good album.
