So, am I the only one who thinks Jay-Z is overrated?

Postby Wisheezy » May 3rd, '10, 22:57

Okay, i'm not hating, but i've never been a Jay fan. I don't like his style at all. Am I the only person who thinks he is possibly one of the most overrated rappers around? Sure he makes good music, but I don't think his lyrical ability is that good, it's overrated. I mean I came across this comment on rap radar, and it pretty much sums up why a rapper such as Eminem is the best to ever do it, and why Jay, well, isn't and is overrated;

@QUEENZ

Okay so you acknowledge that when people say “Eminem is GOAT” it’s an opinion, therefore not fact, but then you hypocritically try to sell your OWN opinion as fact by saying “Jay is GOAT, but Nas is even ‘GOAT’er’”? How dumb is that?

Music is subjective, there is no universally good or bad music. It all depends on you, the listener. Only in sales does the majority matter. And even then, the majority is a snowball of sorts, once an artist picks up steam you have a lot of people “jumping on the bandwagon” to be hip.

Nas is good, I like him more as a human being as a rapper though. Jay is a decent guy as well, but his substance far outweighs his flow and lyrical capabilities in my opinion. Eminem on the other hand almost always comes with a solid flow (name one song where his flow is shit), and his lyrical capabilities keep getting better and better(not in Jay’s case). Personally, I don’t know why Jay has such a cult following to begin with. He is a business man first and foremost, a rapper second. Eminem is a rapper. That’s it. That is what he lives for (in my opinion). You can see it, or even hear it."

Like said in that comment, Jay is firstly a business man, then a rapper. I only see him as a business man. Same goes for 50 cent these days, after get rich or die tryin' that's all he ever became.

I like him and enjoy his songs, but I'm not a huge fan or think he's the GOAT.

I've never liked him. I only listen to Reasonable Doubt and a select few songs from the Blueprint and The Black Album

It's weird how alot of Jay fans can't get in to Eminem and vice versa..

I love Jay. He's just so cool on the mic, he switches up his flow constantly, and is full of so many classic lines. And lets not forget 11 number 1 albums back to back.

IMO, he is just behind Em, as far as what i listen to and what i like.

But as far as Hip Hop goes, looking at the facts and general opinion.. Jay>>Em

Better discography, more years in the game, more classic albums, done it with the best..

But like i said, i'm mainly an Em fan, because i like emotion occasionally on the mic, and that's one thing Jay doesn't do.
My Top 5 (in no order)-

Eminem
Big l
Biggie Smalls
Royce Da 5'9"
Jigga

Reasonable Doubt is a classic.

Blueprint was pretty good.

Everything else is so-so to crap. I didnt like Black Album bar one or two tracks.

So yeah hugely overrated.

I used to think he was overrated, but not anymore.
He's one of the best when it comes to making albums, every album (bar Kingdom Come) is an enjoyable listen that flows really well from start to finish. Even weaker albums like BP3 and The Dynasty have some absolute banging tracks (especially the Dynasty).

Reasonable Doubt is a classic, and the first Bluenprint and The Black Album are at least near classics, imo.
Im listening to the Blueprint now, and it's amazing to see how many mainstream rappers tried to copy it's formula, that album is still lightyears ahead of anything being released in hiphop right now.

The Black Album, imo, is so underrated, people call it weak but Jay was a beast on that album, the
only track I'd consider skipping on there is "Justify My Thug" and thats because of the hook.
He switched his flow up on almost every track on it too.

"99 problems" "Public Service Annoucment" "Moment of Clarity" "Lucifer" "My First Song" "What More Can I Say" "Encore", the whole album to me minus one or two hooks is great to me.

At the O.P, noway are you the only person who think Jay is overrated, as I said I used to think he was, and the majority of people on here think he is.
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified

Jay-Z has a great voice and beats, but he is a terrible rapper. Bad flow and HORRIBLE lyrics.
