The Streets - A Grand Dont Come For Free

Postby MikeNUFC » Apr 27th, '10, 16:36

Just listening to this album for the first time in years and forgot and how fuckin' amazing it is. Seriously, the story this album tells is like no other.

Mike Skinner isn't the best rapper or anything and he knows it but he has the most genius song concepts, lyrics that make me laugh out loud and he is so damn versatile.

I enjoyed Original Pirate Material but this shits all over it and I'd recommend anyone to listen to this album - it's genius.

Listening to Blinded By The Lights, What Is He Thinking and It Was Supposed To Be So Easy (the last one I mentioned is hilarious) remind me how brilliant Skinner is.

Not massively into UK stuff but Kano's first album Home Sweet Home is great, Akala's a really good rapper and Sway's mixtapes are very creative. Dizzee Rascal's first album Boy in Da Corner is my favourite UK rap album ever.

I'm also a big fan of The Streets.

I would recommend the following songs as they are IMO his best work.

Could Well Be In
Blinded By The Lights (My Personal Favorite)
Empty Cans
Dry Your Eyes
Fit But You Know It
Irony Of It All
Heaven For The Weather
Never Went To Church
Needs a leak

Never got into The Streets. The Hooks are catchy enough but Skinner don't appeal to me. I know that i the appeal of the music, common lad talking over a track but it sounds bland and boring

Couldn't be bothered to start a new topic, but if anyone is interested, the fifth and final album from 'The Streets' is being released in a few weeks. It's called "Computers & Blues"

http://computersandblues.com/

Image

1. 'Outside Inside'
2. 'Going Through Hell'
3. 'Roof Of Your Car'
4. 'Puzzled By People'
5. 'Without A Blink'
6. 'Blip On A Screen'
7. 'Those That Don't Know'
8. 'Soldiers'
9. 'We Can Never Be Friends'
10. 'ABC'
11. 'OMG'
12. 'Trying To Kill M.E.'
13. 'Trust Me'
14. 'Lock The Locks'

Mike Skinner says the reason this will be the last album, is because he is "too old" for The Streets
- http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/news/ ... reets.html

As for the first four albums...

Original Pirate Material
, and A Grand Don't Come For Free are classics.
The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living was a poor album
& Everything Is Borrowed was a decent album, certainly a step in the right direction.

I hope this new one is good. I'm looking forward to it anyway.

I fucking hate The Streets and think Skinner is awful. He can't rap or sing, he just talks.

But I've only ever heard bits and bobs, so I'll give all the albums a proper listen when I can.
