eminem needs to explain this shit

Well, when I finished Relapse, I had a whole album of material that didn't make it that I wasn't ready to throw away, so that was going to be Relapse 2. But then I got with Dre in Hawaii and started recording more, and now the new material has knocked out all the old songs. But yeah, the new material is definitely different. Making Relapse, I was still working the drugs out of my system, so there was a lot of...just jokey shit. It was a lot of punchline-y, funny, shock value—kind of going back to The Slim Shady LP. And that was cool, but I've kind of flipped the page. Now I'm going for songs instead of one-liners. I don't want to make shit that you hear once and then the joke's over; I want to make records that you could play a hundred times, a thousand times.

smh Won't Back Down is exactly that. its not a song, its just a bunch of punchlines strung together.

hey dark456, that was kind of inappropriate, but i'm more pissed off that it was spam, and the first posted reply.

on topic, I agree with you to an extent, but I feel that the song did have a point, him showing why he is so great, cause he can do all the metaphors and shit, but in the end its all opinion, as usual.

It is a little disappointing, no reason to dwell on it, though. As long as this is the only song like this I'm fine with it. It's an ok track, but the CD only has room for one like it, IMO.

We have only heard two songs. The other 14 could all be really serious. Wouldn't want a whole album based on these first two songs.

I agree somewhat.

Except, he did say there's "still some of that" in an interview back when it was still named tentatively 'Relapse 2' but still very different.

Obviously he's still going to have some music that's still just for entertainment's sake. But the lines here are rarely shock value. It's non stop REAL metaphorical lyricism and wordplay. The true Eminem that has been absent.

I think he meant he's going for full songs in the sense they'd be crafted as such. Which "Won't Back Down" is. There's a definite distinction between it and what he called 'just rap records'. It feels like a full song. With a thumping production, sung chorus and tightly packed verses.

I think we all knew the first single, the Rihanna one, and the P!nk one, wouldn't probably sound like the rest. He's doing different stuff. And to be fair to him, he's being clever, not disgusting now.

First of all, he doesn't need to explain shit. He owes no explanation to you, whatsoever.

Secondly, this is basically My Name Is/Real Slim Shady/Without Me with an angry tone and awesome, rock your head to it beat. I don't see people complaining about those songs. They have no meaning either, are full of joking punchlines, and have no deep value. And yet they're classics. The problem is, you were probably expecting the best album of all time, and get pissed when one song doesn't meet your 10/10 expectations.

My name is, is the worst song he's ever done, bar the obvious forgettables (Big Weenie/Fack etc.)

Shit rhymes, awful slow flow, and the most irritating of beats.

Won't back down bangs like fuck, and Em just spazzes out.

Won't Back Down's mixed badly (the voice is drowned out by the beat) & there are too many things going on in the beat. Not to mention awkward puns all through it.

Just remember, this isn't CDQ. We'll probably hear a better version soon, I doubt this is the best quality there is.

And WBD doesn't rhyme well? There's some crazy rhyme schemes in there.

It's an opinion, everybody's entitled to one, so I'm not going to say yours is bad. But I think this is a dope song, especially if you have a few listens and catch the lines he's saying (combat man, get it? calm batman, etc.)

how annoying the beat is, is down to personal taste. i love its minimalism.

But "shit rhymes"? That is objectively wrong. The rhymes on My Name Is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> WBD

Punch lines on My Name Is >>>>>>>> Punch lines on WBD

His rhymes on that joint are like normal Slim.. Just slowed down and simplified.. Not interested..

They're not awkward puns, they're intended. And they're not puns they're wordplay.

I don't know what happened to Eminem.

It's all opinions, but in my opinion you can't compare that metaphorical mad house of a track to him saying he's gonna make a Spice Girl pregnant and he's gonna 'fall on his ass faster than a fat bitch that sat down too fast'.. My god, how creative.

But yeah, it's all taste :y:

Amadeo wrote:...isn't a pun a play on words

& the 'fat bitch who sat down too fast' line is amusing. it describes how fast he falls by way of a funny comparison (a fat girl falling through her chair) & it's also a sweet rhyme "fat pound of grass/sat down too fast."

He has much better lines in "Won't Back Down" than his early stuff. "My Name Is" etc. were just zany lyrics playing off of his image. Not actual metaphors or anything truly clever.

"Shake that ass like a donkey with parkinson's", he's got some very good metaphors. And the "combat / calm batman" bit is very good, reminiscent of "checking the male / mail" from "Criminal" and the 'feelings / fillings' line from "Not Afraid".

Except now it's even more clever because... With the 'male / mail' line from "Criminal", that works if anybody says it. But with the 'combat / calm batman' and 'feelings / fillings' lines - Those work because he's made them work. With his pronounciation. He's actually picked words he can manipulate and then linked the situations metaphorically. Good shit.

Overall I don't love "Won't Back Down" though. It has some nice lyricism but was expecting more. Hopefully he has some other stuff that blows me away totally. Hope to fuck it's not just all personal though.
