radio & publicity are the only things keep artists relevant these days (MTV is pretty much irrelevant now). Since Em don't do appearances much anymore he needs radio plays

he doesnt need it
look what recovery has sold so far without a huge radio hit
all he needs is to release great music
but of course radio play will help alot too

you don't get it
to Em's circle fanbase/hip-hop fans maybe he don't need it, but to new fans/people who never heard of him much (just came back from hiatus & last album was no heat) he needs hits to gain new fans. How do you think casual people know about the album? through hit songs via radio of course. That's why albums with hits always keep selling consistent per week.

word of mouth helps too

of course, words of mouth is the main reason why it's doing so well 1st week & 2nd week imo, but people can't keep talking about an albums months later, that's when singles needed.
