did em ever really fall off lyrically?

Postby dchen93 » Jul 4th, '10, 07:22

the time between "encore" and "relapse" is now generally regarded as the "dark ages" for em, and his output during this time was certainly subpar to say the least. however, based on the few releases he had, did he ever really lose his technical skill with lyrics?

encore itself of course had some gems, songs filled with multis like spend some time, never enough, we as americans, etc. then the re-up demonstrated that he was still capable of some technically impressive flows and rhymes - jimmy crack corn and you don't know show this, even if they're not great songs overall (and of course "no apologies" shows his technical skill on display still).

then for 2007 and 2008, he had features on "touchdown", "peep show" and "who want it" with t.i., 50, and trick trick. i really don't like any of these songs, and i was not inclined in the least to revisit them after hearing them for the first time. however, listening back to them now, the multis are still there, and although touchdown had an annoying accent, so did relapse (which has been praised much for technical lyrical display).

so my question is, did his drug period really impair his technical lyrical ability that much? most of the songs from the era certainly weren't that great, and creatively he was at a low, but as far as rhyming and flow, it seems like he was just as capable as he was before (and is now) of creating some complex rhyme schemes and patterns. post your thoughts

sorry for the extra long post btw

Technically no, because even though Relapse had the annoying accents, the actual Rhyming on that album was top notch, if it wasnt for the Annoying accents Relapse would have been a damn strong horrorcore record but the voices just killed the replay value.......

Encore was 50/50 to me..........Some great work(Toy Soldiers, Love You more, Mocking Bird) and some of his worst(Big Weenie, 1st single, Ass like that)........But, again, even on that below average record it had its share of Gems

Hickory Dickory derk diggler
Look at me work wizardry with these words
Am I a jerk or just jerk chicken
Or Chicka chicka chicka chicka jer jer jerkin your chain
22 jerks in a jerk circle
Or is it a circle jerk or wait a minute
What am I sayin, allow me to run it back and rewind it
wait a minute let me ask you again
You might see me joggin, you might see me walkin
you might see me walkin a dead rottweiler dog
with it's head chopped off in the park with a spiked collar
hollerin at him cause the son of a bitch won't quit barkin

of course he fell off, and he is certainly not back. who in his or her right mind can believe that the lyrics on recovery is on the same level as say MMLP? tell me where em is even close to the level of stan or criminal or the best shit on SSLP and TES. he was on his way back on relapse (and refill.. music box!), but recovery was a step backward

Ems rhyme scheme and flow were pretty damn good in that song, so yeah, I agree that his verse was good technically. Dont let the concept and his accent fool you. Take another listen and read the lyrics. Or maybe its just me.

How's his flow good? It's all over the place.
Rhyme scheme was okay, I suppose, still pretty boring, but that doesnt make up for:

Well, I was gunna paste some bad lines, then I realised the whole verse is shit:

Welcome to the Midwest, yes
Where them Detroit playas ball like you have no idea
The more is here, got the whole place looking like it's candy painted
Ain't it like we left the kids at home and just let em loose with the crayons
Fuck, I just hit a jogger, people looking like Frogger
They hopping out of the way whenever they see Marshall's car coming
The kids painted my windows with black permanent marker
And let the rest of the car carpet color like swirl pops
And I got the bass thumping but I'm bound to bump into something
Kids are flying through the air looking like they krumping
The way they tumbling, I gotta do something
But as soon as I hit the car wash to get the tar off
They just right back at it tommorrow
They're like, "Dad this is in, so you're with the trends"
"This is for the pimps, listening to mims, nail polish on the rims"
And now it's custom chrome, but I gotta go do a show
So go on with ya bad self, just have it back to normal when I touch down

Half of it doesnt even rhyme properly.

Okay, Im gon' assume that you think that this "half" doesnt rhyme while you're LISTENIN to it, not while you read it of the paper, cuz that would be just...crazy. He's not a text rapper. I dont know how is that called in English, but his rhymes look like chained rhymes. He constantly spits without pausing, puttin a lot of intertwined rhymes into his verse, which makes this rhyme scheme look more complicated and rhymes are not quite acoustic. I write a lot too, and this kind of rhyme scheme is pretty hard to accomplish.

I dont write, so I wouldnt know how hard this is to write or anything like that. Obviously, on some Em songs you can tell. I'm purely basing on flow, lyrics and rhyming. Which are terrible.

And I see the internal/intertwined rhymes, but there avergage - "mims" with "pimps", "tumbling" with "something".

Obviously, if you write yourself you probably look at the verse differently, which is fair enough.
