OXEGEN 2010 follows a frustrating pattern shared by Glastonbury in 2005. After enduring the muck and mayhem and torrential downpours Saturday night, the sun finally comes out to play at the 11th hour, just as weary and sodden revellers embark on the long trek home.
Still, there's no denying the fact that if you're an Eminem fan, then Sunday is all about one man and one man only. Another round of unfounded rumours are flying around the site claiming the Real Slim Shady just won't show up. It proves to be codswallop, as Marshall Mathers and his D12 posse are back to reclaim the Punchestown headlining crown they held for two sold-out shows in 2003.
"Whassup Dublin?" Eminem incorrectly bellows, but if you dismissed every geographically challenged artist who makes this gaffe at virtually every Irish festival, you wouldn't have anyone left to play.Despite his latest album topping the charts, the material doesn't hold a candle to seasoned classics such as 'The Way I Am'.The biggest selling rap artist in the world might not light up Puncho like the considerably cooler Jay-Z on Friday, but he gives a mildly impressive performance.
Meanwhile, The Prodigy may be performing to a smaller crowd, but they're doubling the intensity with a string of cracking hits such as 'Breathe' and the favourite 'Firestarter'.
It's bizarre to reflect that they've been at this lark since Feile '95 at least, but if anything, they've gotten a little better with age.
Strokes lead singer Julian Casablancas is caught in the crossfire between these mighty headliners and performing to a paltry audience, which is a little embarrassing considering The Strokes once played the main stage here. I can see completion of the fourth album moving up the 'to do' list when he gets back home.
Mumford & Sons lay claim to being one of the highlights right before the final whistle. It's nice to see new faces end the party rather than relying on the usual suspects.
