TOP SELLING ALBUMS IN THE WORLD AS OF AUGUST 20, 2010
1. Lady Gaga “The Fame Monster” – 4,642,000 albums
(200,000 sold in 2008 + 5,894,000 sold in 2009 gives a grand total of 10,736,000, expect it to reach 11 million by the first week of September. It is notable that the separate The Fame Monster EP is not included in this figure, the US accounted for 34% of the total sales and 20% in the UK, 46.5% was sold in the rest of the world. This shows that Gaga is the biggest star in today’s global market as her sales are spread out.
2. Justin Beiber “My World +My World 2.0” – 3,976,000 albums
798,000 was sold in 2009 to give a total of 4,774,000. 66% of Justin’s albums were sold in the U.S (3.127 million) with 34% being spread across the rest of the region. He is an American superstar not yet a global one.
3. Eminem “Recovery” – 3,516,000 albums
Eminem did this in 8 weeks. Of the album’s total 62% percent was from the U.S. and 13.3% in the UK. The remaining 24.7% is in the rest of the world. Although Eminem is a global superstar this album’s success is mostly in the U.S. He will reach 4 million next week.
4. Lady Antebellum “Need You Now” - 2,874,000 albums
88% of sales are from the U.S. Lady A are not yet global but they are very popular in the U.S.
5. Black Eye Peas “The E.N.D.” – 2,582,000 albums
The Peas sold 4,611,000 albums in 2009 for a total of 7,193,000 albums. Call that a Boom Boom Pow. Of their total sales, the US accounted for 38% while it sold 30% of its total in the UK. The rest of the world attributed to 32% of album sales. They too are global superstars second in global album sales behind Gaga.
6. Sade “Soldier of Love” – 2,161,000 albums
The smooth operator’s comeback album was mostly received in the U.S where 57% of sales were from. The rest of the world accounted for 43%. The group is another global phenom.
7. Susan Boyle “I Dreamed A Dream” – 2,118,000 albums
Add this to 6,014,000 sold in 2009 for a total of 8,132,000, Susan sold 48% of her albums in the US and nearly 25% in the UK. A new global star
8. Alicia Keys “The Element of Freedom – 2,077,000 albums
Sales after a December 2009 release were 1,030,000 for grand total of 3,107,000 for the piano lady; 46% and 20% of the total was sold in the U.S and UK respectively. The rest of the world bought 34% of the album’s sales. Keys is one of the remaining global stars.
9. Michael Bublé “Crazy Love” – 1,814,000 albums
3,300,000 were sold in 2009 for a grand total of 5,114,000 with only 1 single. Talk about a mega star. The US and UK both account for 35% each of the album sales. The rest of the world bought the remaining 30%.
10. Ke$ha “Animal” – 1,627,000 albums
54.5% of the album was sold in the U.S. The newcomer is establishing herself as an up and coming global star.
