Eminem deserves ALL of the success he gets. But I will admit I didn't expect Recovery to be as big of an album as it was. Big props to Eminem.

OMG I just read on Billboard that industry insiders are very disappointed in Katy's sale because her label shipped more than 1 million for the first week

http://www.billboard.com/news/katy-perr ... 2873.story

Executives at other major labels say they expected Perry's sophomore album to debut with sales of anywhere from 300,000 to 700,000 units, with most figuring the album would scan about 400,000.

"I'd like to meet one industry executive last week who thought her album would do under 200,000 units, because I don't think that person exists," a senior executive at a rival major says.

According to sources, EMI shipped 1 million units of the album prior to its U.S. street date of Aug. 24, which indicates that big-box retail chains like Walmart, Target and Best Buy were expecting the album to post robust first-week sales, as was Starbucks, which featured the title in its stores.

It would also be roughly in line with typical industry practice of shipping about twice as much product as anticipated first-week sales for a major album release. But prerelease shipments of "Teenage Dream" turned out to be about seven times debut-week sales.

god those ppl are seriously dumb

But, but...why would her label do that? She's a classic singles artists. People expect her albums to be a few hit singles and subpar filler. So they go for the hit singles and don't much care (comparatively speaking) for her album. And most of the time they're right. They buy Eminem albums because they expect the songs to be good, have meaning etc. independently from their marketability. I just don't get how they could miscalculate like that, aren't these people specifically trained for these jobs and should know better? Hell, I know better.

Rihanna tried to transition into the album seller category with her last album IMO. It had a (for a pop artist) somewhat cohesive artistic concept etc. But her label was disappointed/impatient and is dragging her back into the fluffy direction apparently. It isn't easy to be taken seriously once you've established yourself as queen of mindless pop tunes.
