"Eminem returns"

Postby Shit Can Happen » Sep 13th, '10, 12:54

If you watched the VMA pre-show they were talking about Em's "comeback", and if you go on the MTV site one of the headlines reads "Eminem returns." Am I the only one thinking he's been back since 2009? I know Relapse didn't appeal to everybody, but didn't that mother fucker sell like 600k the first week and is certified platinum now? I'd say that deserves recognition as far as him being in the game is concerned. Whether you're one of the people who enjoyed the album or not, he was definitely "there," albeit not with the same appeal that he has now in the Recovery era. Dude even won an award in '09 at the VMAs for a song off that album and was involved in one of the biggest advertisement campaigns for the show that year.

Or maybe they just meant his return to the VMA stage as a performer *shrug*.

just so you know, they've been calling Rec the "comeback" album since the day it dropped, it's not news here

Relapse sold big first week, but it didn't have much longevity at all, the public's reactions were mostly mixed/negative and there's nothing memorable about it ('m talking about successful singles & stuff like that) And most important thing is, Eminem himself trashed Relapse so ppl figured out that he don't want Relapse to be remembered as his "comeback" album so they just ignored it.

Yes, I realize that. 90% of the topics people discuss is something that in some way has already been discussed before. This is still immediately based on something from last night, though. I don't vividly read every thread here nor do I consider if Alaine will be captivated by my threads before I post them, but thanks for the help :).

You didn't like Relapse so therefore you think it makes sense for Recovery to be the comeback album. Big surprise. I liked Relapse so therefore I see that it was successful enough to at least validate Em's existence in the industry. The album is still platinum no matter what you wanna say about it not having longevity, and in today's music industry that is pretty significant.

Hell, I stopped paying attention to the sales after awhile, but according to wiki it is now double platinum. If that's the case then he sure as fuck was "back" with that album.

everything I said about Relapse in my previous post are facts I collect from reading sale analyzing article, shows me ONE thing I said that biased?
Relapse sold big first week, but it didn't have much longevity? check
public's reactions were mostly mixed/negative? check, even Eminem said so himself
no successful single? check
Eminem himself trashed relapse? check

Relapse is double platinum but it got a re-release, for an artist like Eminem, I'd say it underperformed.

And the singles are very important these days, Jay-Z sold less than Em last year but ppl still thought he sold more cuz his singles were big and got played everywhere. Singles are what keep albums & artists relevant nowadays. I still remember this time last year Relapse was like dead already and right now Recovery still going strong, it may even return to #1 this week.

What MTV mean is that he "returns" to the VMA stage for the first time since like 2002 i believe.

I'm aware that Relapse wasn't big commercially with singles, radio play, or being listened to by a lot of non-fans, as well as how much bigger Recovery is, but my entire argument is that having an album that went double plat as well as being a significant enough part of last year's VMA show is enough to say that he was there and not back now. He even did a friggin' acceptance speech about him being back now after being gone. I know the songs off Blueprint III appealed to casual listeners more, but the fact that Relapse sold more isn't anything to brush off like it means nothing. Even if it was mostly big Eminem fans who bought it, it still says something for how many fans he has.

However if it was just intended as a reference to his first VMA performance in years, then whatever.

My guess by comeback, if not what AJ said, was about him being back at the top of the music world like he was from 99-03

He says that last Relapse album was ehhh so I'm sure he means the Refill one.

I think MTV just said that b/c he didn't really have a big performance on a VMA stage since 03 and the White America/ COMC one. But then again - every CD by some huge musician who releases a new album is labelled "comeback"...just wait for that new Beyonce CD haha.
August 22 2013 - from Berlin to Paris, 400€ spent just for Eminem. IT WAS WORTH EVERY SINGLE CENT!

not true. people only need "comeback" when they're away from the scenes for a long time/their last effort disappoints/something big happens in their personal life... people who constantly has hits and stays relevant in the game don't need "comeback"
