So how do we actually get the "free" tones to our phone?

You click on the file type that you want to download, attach it to an email and send it to your phone. There is a post in the forums is called "How to send ringtones to your phone", and this will tell you which email address to use. For example for Alltel you would send the email to: 1234567890@message.Alltel.com 1234567890 being your phone number.
