Hip Hop & School

Postby Culture » Sep 23rd, '10, 02:13

Just this year listening to hip-hop has helped me at school. Let me cite some examples.

My psych teacher asked the class if we knew who Dr. Openheimer was.
"My brains a smart bomb combined with Openheimer design" - Rhyme Asylum
I wikipedia'd Openheimer after hearing that therefor I knew he helped with the A Bomb.

We had a vocab list with the word "obsequious" on it.
"You're as obsequious as the disciples of Jesus" - Canibus
I had looked up that term and knew it meant to gain favor by being submissive.

My mythology teacher asked us if we knew who Promethius was.
"Promethius stole fire from Zeus, I'm stealing his thunder" - Rhyme Asylum
I also knew he was the mythological version of Jesus (more or less) from research after listening to Greydon Square (an athiest rapper).

My psych teacher asked us if we knew what the tuskegee experiments were.
"A tuskegee Jesus vs a sneaky tuskegee demon" - Canibus
I wikipedia'd this and also read a book on it after that. Syphillis placebo experminet with African Americans.

And many other instances. Anyone else?

I can't think of any off the top of my head besides The Brain helping me in Anatomy. But writing has helped me a lot with vocabulary cause I'm always looking up new words.

The Brain will probably help me in psychology. I haven't heard it in forever.

I started listening to Prince Ea again a couple days ago and caught onto so many lines that I didn't understand before. Made him sound so much better.

"And you're never seen after like Oswalds accomplice" That's one for example.

Not only has listening to hip hop helped in certain areas, writing it myself has helped in my English classes without a doubt. Both listening and writing expanded my vocabulary and diction while writing, and it made writing poetry far from a struggle.
