I remember listening to Relapse when I was drunk and it sounded a lot better than when I was sober, but in that condidtion I also thought that fat chick I met was a Megan Fox look alike
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael

See success is like suicide

Hmmm... I agree with the original poster in that, having "experience" with pills would, in a sense, deepen your connection to the album. I've only done pills a handful of times while in college. That shit fucked me up hardcore, even with just a few drinks, or even just taking a few pills without any alcohol. I don't think it has given me any "insight" into the album - I was just fucking around a bit - but it gave me an appreciation for just what pills can do to you.

So sure, I can reasonably agree that if you've had any serious "bout" with pills you will view the album in a different way than the rest of us. Just like if you grew up in a ghetto, I'm sure you would have a deeper connection to Ready to Die. And yes, whoever suggested this, if you were someone famous who experienced what Eminem did 2000-2002, I'm sure you would be able to develop a more intimate connection with The Eminem Show.

However, I think the OP is also giving WAY too little credit to the imagination and intellect of the people listening to Relapse. Particularly his fans... were not stupid, ignorant, or uneducated to what Eminem has gone through. Just because we have not shared that experience does NOT mean we cannot "get" what he is doing, as you seem to suggest. I have a full appreciation for the album, and think it is beautifully crafted. Its an ultra-creative look into Eminem's drug struggles, relapse(s) and the start of his recovery. Maybe you "get it" or "feel it" or whatnot a little more, or from a different perspective... and that's all good... but don't short side the rest of us.

Finally, and I don't know if you were "encouraging" pill use or not, but I would in no way, shape, or form recommend or suggest to anyone ever to dabble in pills. I don't want to get preachy, but at the same time I wouldn't want anyone to think that shit is "cool". Because a pill habit IS a dangerous habit, and honestly anyone who has the "option" to take pills to get fucked up is an idiot. By "option" I mean... if you are addicted to the shit, then you're just helpless. If you are doing it just to get fucked up because you can... then you're dumb. You are really dumb, for real.

I think this is nonsense.

As it happens, I also like Relapse and I have also done my fair share of drugs, including pain-killers. So it would be much easier for me to agree with you, just to emphasize I'm not coming from a position of strength here, I'm seeing this logically.

This constant thing people have with being able to relate "wow man you can like relate to it because that shit happens for real" is fucking retarded and boring now. Seriously, if all you care about in music... art, is relating to things, you could do it yourself.

That's just a vested interested in empathy and nothing more. You just like to hear your own life played back to you through various mediums. But to say you can't appreciate it if you haven't been through it is complete bollox and it's a trip-up people always make.

Newsflash: I haven't been a hitman either but I can still appreciate Pulp Fiction. Also, don't ever recall being a legendary boxer yet strangely, I love Raging Bull. Not to mention the fact that the things you're often relating to go beyond the absolute artificial situation. You relate to the anger, the humour, the despair - Things which are universal, regardless of circumstance.

There's so many elements to appreciate and love about things beyond just literal relation to the actual scenario or situation. It's such a narrow-minded misconception to only see the subject matter. This is why people who say Relapse is lacking in substance just because they dislike the serial-killer theme also annoy me. Substance doesn't = realism.

I would assume OP you haven't gone on gleeful killing sprees; eating fetuses , chopping up celebrities or raping women either but yet you still love Relapse BEYOND just the drug-references surely. That alone should disprove your entire theory to you.

What's to love about Relapse is his technical prowess. His rhyming, his flows, his descriptive lyricism, his imagery - And all round mastery of lyricism. You can appreciate those things whether you've literally been through what he's talking about, or not. All it adds is a level of emotional resonance, an angle of empathy you can share with him to no doubt (for some), appreciate it in a slightly new realm. But to say you cannot enjoy the album unless you've been through X is ridiculous.
