Elaborate?

I don't know, it's hard to verbalise the mix of thoughts and emotions that come into play with a statement like that because there's so many finite, ambiguous things that make me think something like that - Consciously and unconsciously... But I'll try...
On say The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Mathers LP he was very much in-character. There were of course lots of 'real' moments as him but he was largely playing the antagonist, the class clown or the provocative poet for the sake of his audience...
THEN, on The Eminem Show - I feel he dug deeper, beyond subversion for its own sake (but very cleverly done nonetheless) and started to honestly reflect on the shit-storm he'd piled up for himself. It was an absolutely perfect evolution and I think his peak. I think on that album he was at his most honest, bare, believable and impressive...
Onto Encore, he was obviously somewhat addicted and I think unsure of where to go so ended up trying to please everybody at once and we got an album of half serious / half silly. This was obviously his major failure in terms of a coherent album, but it still holds some great material. I feel on here he was fully at grips with his place in society but he felt like a dancing monkey, a showman trapped in a cage so resorted to ridiculous fluff to try and fart his way out of it lmao.
Relapse, I think he made an attempt to stop rapping about himself as the sole target, to stop making his direct personal life the subject of his material. Which is why he's rapping more like a narrator and why his phrasing is more like a writer than a rapper. He's completely in and out of various character forms but almost none of them are him, just versions and exaggerations. I think it's by far his most crafted album, but I think he felt it a failure so ditched the idea.
