So they're being illogical or dishonest when they only get offended at selected things. Because if we are taking things literally, let's be consequent about it. I have a hunch that it's a mixture of genuinely not understanding the songs and wanting to be outraged, with a dash of "Look at me being a moral upstanding citizen as I criticize this bad, bad man" self-righteousness thrown in for good measure.

Exactly, and that's the point. The criticism that says Eminem hates gays and women because just look what he is writing is dumb. There is more relevant and thoughtful criticism that he never has to face.

Right... but the gay person has still been bashed.

Are you saying now that it is a real possibility that gays get hurt in real life because of Eminem's lyrics? Then there is definitely a problem, isn't it?

Does an artist have any responsibilities for the consequences of his work? Why not?

We can praise Eminem for his inspirational songs such as "Not Afraid"... no, wait, not that one because it sucks but you get the point... :coffee: they have undoubtedly helped many people. but if we do, why couldn't we call him out on potential negative consequences too. But no, then it's all "people just don't get it" and "bad parenting" and whatever.

Just something to think about.

Anyone who would go out and hurt gay people after listening to Eminem's music is so screwed up he/she would end up hurting people regardless. If it's not after listening to Eminem's music, it'll be after seeing a violent movie or playing a violent video game or after doing nothing at all...just flipping out because this person is a psychopath.

The media does NOT "corrupt the minds" of healthy individuals.

But it IS just that.

You know technically I don't have a problem with gay people - it just that they keep whining about shit. Like someone already said - they're worse than any feminist group protesting male superiority.

Not to mention, they highlighted "Not Afraid"...his own fault for writing that piece of shit, I guess.

Even worse was they go "Eminem, known for his genius wordplay" and they played a clip of No Love with the line "Stand on my monopoly board, that means I'm on top of my game".

A line so genius that a TRShady member predicted it before the album even fucking came out:

LOL, yeah, I remember Amadeo predicting that. Damn Lil Wayne for corrupting him with this bullshit.

But, see, I think that there must be some sort of disconnect between longtime-fans, hip hop listeners etc. and casual listeners. How often has "Not Afraid" been referred to as "mature", "inspirational" and so on? I think it's a misguided attempt to turn a therapy session into song. Obviously it sounds different for some people on the radio.

Perhaps it comes down to the "not listening, not understanding what's going on" thing again? NA was easy to grasp so a lot of people liked it. LTWYL caught backlash because it didn't spell things out like that. A lot of his earlier songs were not recognized as brilliant and complex but condemned for lines the press ripped out of context. So the "monopoly board" thing might sound clever for people who usually listen to charts radio? And don't forget, one of the most successful acts in the last few years has been Weezy...
