Well I do agree that the average music critic really doesn't... well actually, what they do with Em in particular is hold him to a higher lyrical standard than everybody else.
I mean, I love Kanye's album too but Em touches on more in more intelligent ways in the span of one verse than Kanye or others do for an entire album. Yet they praise Ye for the odd line as if it's an album's worth of lyrical genius or major step forward.
It does also need to be a marriage. Of music AND lyrics. And I do agree that... when the lyrics aren't really there (but the music is), they tend to not care yet when reversed, they care very much. It's a bit of a double-standard. That's why they're not 'proper' rap fans though.
As I know people who don't listen to rap really or, I've seen people say X Em song is great just due to a chorus or the beat etc. People who aren't into rap are into it for different reasons. If you don't care about lyrics but rather just the general melody or overall sound, it's a different game for you.
Which is why it's all so variable and ultimately a waste of time talking about anyway. Who gives a fuck. Like what you like and mosey the fuck on.
