Gangsta Rap=Dead?

Postby FreeSpeech » Nov 28th, '10, 03:14

I think it's a good thing. I always thought the gangster persona was stupid and made a bunch of kids act like idiots. I mean, what popular gangster rappers are left? 50, Game, a few others. Wayne left the gangster image for the most part. All of the new hype is far from gangster, Cole, Cudi, Drake, etc.

I'm sure it's not dead, it's just not as predominate in "popular" hip-hop currently, but it's still out there. Interesting point tho, I haven't noticed this so thanks for pointing this out, kinda interesting you noticed this :y:

Yeah, I should have wrote dying out. It'll always be around, it's just not relevant anymore. Are there any upcoming gangsta rappers that have hype? Nipsey Hussle yeah, but he really doesn't get much attention and will probably flop.

yeah it's virtually dead, and the blame has to go to those who didn't do it right and put it in a corner where it was overexposed and overused to the extent that it sounded the same.

ice t who is the godfather of gangsta rap spoke about it last year and he made very good points, he spoke about how it was almost blackballed out of the rap genre. he said 50 cent is the last gangsta rap artist, and at first i completely disagreed, but he was completely right. before i self destruct represents so much of why gangsta rap is dead, and not in terms of the cause of its death (its a good album), but more about how it proves that gangsta rap has no impact anymore.

i mean look at some of the elite gangsta rap artists and how they are faring - jadakiss last album was nowhere near gangsta rap, game can't get a release, scarface and ice cube are not allowed to influence, dmx is missing, beanie sigel is missing, snoop dogg is the furthest thing from gangsta rap etc. etc.

in saying that, lloyd banks hfm2 is a great gangsta rap album, and probably the best mainstream (even though he's an independent) gangsta rap album for 3-4 years.

hip hop dreadfully needs gangsta rap.

he's one of the major culprits as to why it's dead.

he chooses to be a gangsta rap artist when it suits him, a persona for a song. he's a genuine actor.

gangsta rap dieing doesn't hurt him because he has many personas, but he doesnt realize (or care) that him doing that kills gangsta rap. these idiot rappers think talking about guns, drugs etc. = gangsta rap....no it's not, gangsta rap used to be about storytelling about the harsh realities of their lives, now it's just about an image they try to portray, it's barely about music.

ice cube said it best on probably the last true iconic classic gangsta rap song. at 4:46

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzeZhCt5PVA

same with the last true great gangsta rap song snoop dogg did.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YACBzn-hdCs

who do you think they are talking to?

This kind of rap is probably in the underground, not so much into the mainstream as it used to be in the 90's.These new artists you just mentioned above don't quite fit into the gangsta rap genre.First of all some don't have the voice for it and second most of them haven't actually lived in a "bad" hood to actually make a song about that(carrying a gun and using drugs isn't a must lol).Even tho Eminem never really been a "thug" i do like his gangsta persona/songs/voice lol. :sweating: .Last gangsta rappers are probably Ice Cube,Dr.Dre,50cent.Trick Trick,Lloyd Banks,DMX..and that's about it(i mean from the mainstream).

Here we go...
Once upon a time, not long ago
I fucked a few bitches, smoked a lot of dro
In my '64 Impala up in Hollywood
Bitches hoppin' in 'cause the ride is good
But some B.G. wanksta was mislead
So I filled his motherfuckin' chest with lead
Snoop said : "Nigga, I'm broke and in need of cash"
So I signed his skinny ass to Death Row fast

''Gangsterrap is nothing but an oxymoron.'' - Joe Budden

And if you want to know why? A gangster won't talk about his business on a track, because then he would only be endangering himself. That's like a murderer confessing on a song, telling every single person that listens to his music that he's guilty of certain illegal things. A real gangster would never do that. So, in my opinion, gangsta rap never existed. All there is, is a mixture of horrorcore, violent lyrics, and an attitude delivery in those songs.
"Truth is limitless in its range; if you drop a 'T' and look at it in reverse, it could hurt."
- Lupe Fiasco
