Rise of Kanye=The Rise of the Suburban & College Rapper

Postby FreeSpeech » Nov 28th, '10, 04:48

In 2000, what major rappers could you name that weren't from the "hood" or acted like it? Rakim, maybe Common? I know a good deal went to college, like Canibus and Talib Kweli, but they didn't really perpetuate the fact (other than Canibus' stupid "smart" rhymes haha)
Now:
Kanye - Suburban Chicago, went to college
Asher - Suburban PA, went to college
J Cole - Suburban NC, went to college on academic scholarship, graduated MCL
Wiz Khalifa - Lived around the world (military father) then Pittsburgh. Not suburban, but not hood
Mac Miller - Same high school as Wiz
Wale - Suburban Maryland, played football in college
Drake - Suburban Toronto
Kid Cudi - Suburban Cleveland, went to college

^These include some, if not most, of the biggest names out. Very interesting trend.

Yeah, thing is, you would never know most of these guys went to college by their lyrics or demeanor.

That suprised me, I heard about it a while back. It sounds like a pussy degree, but nursing is crazy hard and you make good $. I know a couple guys who are nursing majors and they're all real smart.
