Don't get me wrong, it's good. Hell, a ton of it is phenomenal. It's just, everyone acts like most new rap can't compare. In my opinion, today's rappers far outdo many old school guys. I respect old school for what it was: groundbreaking. However, that doesn’t mean it was better. Like, I can respect the Model T because it was the original, but I'll take a 2010 Lambo any day. Production nowadays is altogether way better, no question. It’s not just beats, because that’s very subjective, but production as a whole. Yeah, I know technology has a ton to do with that, but if something sounds good it sounds good. As for lyrics, that is also very subjective. However, when it comes to multis and rhyme schemes, new school comes out on top. For everyone who claims today’s rappers just talk about bullshit, the old school did a lot of that too. I’d say the meaningful/BS ratio is pretty consistent. Pac is possibly my favorite rapper (I can never choose) but I can admit he made many meaningless songs just like all of today’s rappers.
Here's lyrics from 36 chambers, which is regarded by many as one of the GOAT albums:
“Well I'm a sire, I set the microphone on fire
Rap styles vary, and carry like Mariah
I come from the Shaolin slum, and the isle I'm from
is comin through with nuff niggaz, and nuff guns
so if you wanna come sweatin, stressin contestin
you'll catch a sharp sword to the midsection
Don't talk the talk, if you can't walk the walk
Phony niggaz are outlined in chalk
A man vexed, is what the projects made me
Rebel to the grain there's no way to barricade me
Steamrollin niggaz like a eighteen wheeler
with the drunk driver drivin, there's no survivin”
If Wayne spit these bars today, I guarantee a bunch of hip hop snobs would hop on him and call them wack. They’d get on him for simple rhyme schemes, the metaphors, etc. In no way am I comparing Wayne to Wu or saying he’s better, I’m just saying some people suck the old school’s dick a little too much.
Hate away on me...
