Lil wayne has certainly influenced him to write stupid punchlines and use wack beats. I listened to going through changes earlier and the first thing i noticed was how smooth was the flow. And the beat of GTC is great. Now, I secretly want him to be influenced by kanye's mbdtf, as he must've realised its critical acclaim. Then, he'll get back his old magic and spit hard.

Nah I know what he means. Kanye's content is more of a storytelling kind of nature with deeper meanings and connotations. He is focused on making great music period rather than looking to be the best technically. And I agree that Em's best material is the emotional stuff he does - that's one of his strongest attributes; his ability to tell a story and make us feel what he is going through. His content on "I Need A Doctor" is definitely the kind of stuff I wanna be hearing more of from now on

Does it really have to be someone that is famous (Kanye West)? People like Rakim and Redman are critically acclaimed too but they just aint lucky enough to be signed to a big ass label that can afford radio stations to play their songs (plus a few other things of course). Kanye West wouldn't even be in the mainstream if it wasn't for his genius production cus lyrically he isn't that sharp at all.

It's not like there is a specific receipt that guarantee you success in the mainstream.

That's true. I liked "Beautiful", but I preferred NA even though it had a few useless punchlines, because it wasn't as dark and I liked hearing him tackle an emotional song in more general but still relatable way.

I think there should be a mixture of both, technicality and basic storytelling. The technical aspects is what makes rap more of a craft than just getting lucky enough to have made a catchy song picked up by the radio. Involves more talent but sometimes when an artist is too technical it takes away meaning and feeling from the song.
