People think Eminem is actually simplifying his lyrics in this song for the purpose of mimicry.

The truth is, Eminem actually WROTE like that back then. He's mimicking himself. His verse can best be decribed as "self-loathing."

Encore has all the things he's making fun of: shitty lyrics, catchy chorus, no substance. See "Just Lose It."

If you asked him to write a verse with "syllables" (which is what he and Jay-Z seem to call multis) he wouldn't do much better than this verse back then.

That's not the correct analysis.

Encore, he fucked around a lot and made some bad music yes - but the times he was fucking around, he MEANT to fuck around. He wasn't trying to sound profound and be complex on "Big Weenie", he MEANT it to sound like that lmao.

So it's not valid to say 'that's how he wrote', he's visibly / audibly bored and fucking around. If it's intentional then you can't damn it for being what it's intending to be. On "Just Lose It", it is shitty and annoying yes, but do you honestly think he meant it to be anything else?

Problem is, there's nothing else to gain from it. It's just, bad. He went from genuinely witty to bored and juvenile but at no point did he think it was genius lmao.

Eminem wrote this "Syllables" song to make fun of songs with shitty lyrics with no substance, catchy hooks and club bangaz.

He had been putting out songs like this for the last 3 years prior (Encore and Re-Up), so he's inadvertently making fun of his own garbage music.

And just which songs of his exactly fit that description?

"Mosh"? that's a substance-less club banger is it? or how about "Mockingbird" a personal ballad to his daughter, comprised of confessions of him sobbing at Christmas over not being able to buy her any gifts... Just a beat and a hook?

The only songs you could even argue is "Just Lose It" and "Ass Like That" - and even those do not fit what you're trying to define. Those are just bad Eminem songs, they're shitty attempts at comedic tracks but you're calling a peach a pear here.

You're lumping all bad tracks together and mis-matching the definitions. "Just Lose It" and "Ass Like That" were not made with the intentions, nor with the execution of the tracks that you mean and which he's parodying in that verse / song.

They're both really bad, broad comedy tracks. But that's down to Eminem's crappy sense of humour at the time and lame attempt to satirize himself / society. But puking on people and referencing Pee Wee Herman getting caught jacking off a movie theater is hardly a shortcut to Billboard success and it's not the same thing as singing about sipping on drinks and getting women.

On the Encore songs where he clearly wasn't fucking around, he still had the same crap monosyllabic style: Mockingbird.

Now you're just carrying on about your criticism of Encore, which is a different debate.

Calling the music bad and calling it what you're calling it isn't the same thing. All bad music isn't the same, music is bad for different reasons.

And Eminem's lyricism having gone downhill, him rhyming less impressively, him running out of shit to talk about etc. is very different from making compromised club hits for their own sake. Which, even on Encore - he did not do.

His music was BAD, but no - "Syllables" is not hypocrisy because he never did that. If he was just parodying bad music period fair enough but even on Encore, he was self-aware. He was playing with format, even when being ridiculous. Like burping in his own chorus then saying the chorus is fucked - I'm not saying that's good, but it's not what he's criticizing.
