Who else doesn't like J Dilla?

Postby FreeSpeech » Jan 2nd, '11, 04:55

He is considered one of the GOAT producers by many people. IMO, it's largely just because he died, a la Biggie and Pac. It's not like he's BAD, he's very technically good, but I don't like him. He's too boring, his beats get very old to me. They aren't exciting. There's no Dilla beat I can't get out of my head. I'm sure I've missed some good ones, but overall, I'm not a fan.

IDK, I just can't get in to him. I've listened to tons of his instrumentals on youtube, and some of them are very soothing/"pretty" but nothing makes me wanna put him on replay.

Enlighten me, give me his best.

i could listen to the song "House of Flying Daggers" on repeat for hours... everything about the songs from the lyrics and flows down to the production is how rap is ment to be... and to think it came out in 09, gives me hope for rap... if you dont like that beat than idk what to say lol
be the best you can be, and if thats not good enough for people... than fuck em

i just commented based on what others would say in a slightly exaggerated way

Yeah, I forgot about that, it's great.

But IDK, my typical reaction to a Dilla beat is: :) :y:
Mytypical reaction to a Kanye/Dre/9th Wonder beat is: :o :worship:  :flutter: :y: :y: :y:

kanyes old beats r hot, i dont like his new ones

my top 5 producers are: 1) dre/premiere (you could make a case for either) 3)rza (because he knows how to make a beat fit perfectly for a rappers style (see Tical, OB4CL, Ironman, etc) 4) Havoc and 5)alchemist

J. Dilla's beats are almost all about taste. It just has that sound that died off so long ago, and its really good chill out music.

I found about him last year and he was instantly one of my favorite producers, then I find out a month or so later that he's dead :'( . I don't think he's overrated because of his death or else more people would know about him, and his position in everyone's top 10 would be more consistent. The fact is producers don't get that casket-love that rappers get because not too many people appreciate the beat when someone else's named is stamped as the artist of the full song.

It's true that a lot of people suddenly jumped on his dick after he died, but for me his was still a great producer. I don't think any other producer matches the soulful vibe that Dilla put out.

My favourite Dilla beat:

I don't agree with the OP at all, but I can understand and respect his opinion as I feel that way about some Hip Hop "legends" a la Big L. Biggie and Pac are different story for me though, but I can see why people would find them grossly overrated too.

Yeah I feel the same about Big L. But nah I love Biggie and Pac (more Pac), I was just using them as an example. I feel like SOME people overhype them just because they died.

Usually any rapper that dies in their prime (preferably shot) gets their legacy blown out of proportion, now I'm not saying Big L isn't dope, dude had immense talent but where he would have been if he was still alive is all baseless conjecture. Some say he would range from Nas, Jay z status-Beanie Sigel, Memphis bleek status. I also don't like how he only became top 10 after he died, before that he was just as obscure as other member ins the DITC who were equally as talented as he was.

J Dilla (along with Premo) represented the best 90's Hip-Hop production. Just people's tastes and technology has changed. I also got added respect for those two cos making a beat back then is nowhere like making a beat today and yet they could make songs sound hot whilst being varied (even though Dilla has a more chilled laid back sound).

I don't think anyone can say he's overrated tbh, he wasn't getting major exposure like Timberland or Kanye does nowadays, just a respected producer known in Hip-Hop
