J Cole - Opinions?

Postby FreeSpeech » Jan 2nd, '11, 08:31

I love him, great lyricist and his mixtapes are great. However, IDK if he will become a superstar. He just doesn't seem to have the voice or persona. Say what you will, but Drake has a very attractive (as in marketable) voice and a very fame-ready persona. J Cole? I'm not sure. I can definately see his album being a flop, even if it's great lyrically. I don't know if he's capable of making a massive radio hit which is pretty much needed in order to sell big numbers.
I think Wiz has a better chance of selling big numbers than Cole.

I agree with the comment about Wiz, I personally think Drake's voice is really fucking annoying (And I know mainstream-dickriders who would agree), but I can see J. Cole being on the same level as Wale & B.o.B in terms of album sales (Minus the success in B.o.B's singles). When I say that, I mean selling around 90-100k first week.

When it was said that Drake is the Jay-Z of now, and J. Cole is Nas, I almost completely agreed. Almost, except Drake doesn't have the potential skill level Jay-Z had.

That being said, 10 years from now J. Cole is going to be remembered as one of the best rappers of the new generation, even if the market doesn't show him love at first.

I don't think Cole will blow up in the sense that Jay or Em did. But he's smart, and I know he will make music that will appeal to a lot of people without selling out the integrity of his music.

Yeah, he's dope, a good lyricist and singer

He raps and sings better than Drake, IMO

J Cole will get the same sort of popularity as Joe Budden, i love this guys music, but i don't see him gaining Jay/Nas type fame

I think he has so much potential, and I hope he lives up to it.

He said it himself, many of his tracks are too good to put on a mixtape. He said he has a song that he showed Jay-Z and Jay-Z went nuts, something that's going to be a hit. He also said he has a story-telling song about a girl having an abortion that is in the caliber of a "Stan".

I didn't like Friday Night Lights as much as his other two mixtapes, but it's cool. I'm waiting to see his album to see what he's capable of (he keeps calling it a classic himself).

No doubt he's a dope rapper.but the hit single thing depends on his record company too,if they can hand him some real good tracks i think he'll be fine.
Just d way dr dre presented 50 cent with (in da club) and all those dope tracks.

He's on Jay's label so he has access the the best resources. I just don't think he has the voice for a radio hit, it's not unique enough. Then again, since he's on Jay's label, if he got a Kanye beat w/ a Rihanna hook, it could be huge. IDK, I hope he's succesful.

who cares honestly
J.Cole is very skilled and a great MC. he probably won't become a superstar for those same reasons. people don't buy dope lyricism, they buy pop. J.Cole will be sick to me no matter how huge he gets

J. Cole >>>>>>>>>> Drake not even close

Man, Drake isn't far off Cole. If you judge Drake off his radio songs, yeah Cole is much better. But prime, lyrical Drake is sick.

^Great lyrical Drake song. It's not all about multis, it's meaning, and this is great.
I personally like prime Drake over prime Cole.
Great Drake lines from that song alone:

No autuotune, but you can feel the Pain

Fuck all y'all
We ignore feelings here
Premature millionaires
Welcome to my realest year

And plus things are just surreal at home
People think I've changed just because my appeal has grown

All my old friends think I got a new crowd.
And people seem to notice every time I do smile.
I guess that mean they come few and far between.
Even though am living out what you would call the dream.

Drake is super-talented, I don't know why he's so hated on this forum. I don't know why rapping about woman is off-putting, most guys here are probably sexually frustrated or something. They'd rather hear Love You More about hitting your girl or some shit.

Anyway, listen to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpYSiczt ... re=related
Sounds like early Eminem around Infinite. Drake is no slouch when it comes to lyrics, he's WELL above average. People just like to favor the less famous.. If J. Cole was in Drakes spot and Drake was in Coles, most people would favor Drake.

dude, the voice doesn't matter,it's the song.if (Game) can have 2 top 10 singles(hate it or love) (how we do) with that hardcore voice why not him,all he needs is a hit record.

The voice COMPLETELY matters. Why do you think 50's big? His lyrics are(were) good, but they're nothing amazing. I'm not insulting Cole, I love him, I just don't know if he'll blow up. And he doesn't have a "hardcore" voice. As for Game, those singles were dropped when gangsta rap was still cool. Plus, he has a very unique voice.
