nas I gave you power intro

Postby Good For Nothing » Jan 9th, '11, 01:06

One of Nas' best and more versatile song, first off I think the concept is great and through-out the verses he describes life through the eyes of a gun perfectly without making it sound corny, but i think it could have done without the intro:

Damn! Look how muh-fuckers use a ni.gga
Just use me for whatever the fuck they want
I don't get to say shit
Just grab me, just do what the fuck they want
Sell me, throw me away
Ni.ggaz just don't give a fuck about a ni.gga like me right?
Like I'm a f... I'm a gun, shit
It's like I'm a motherfuckin gun
I can't believe this shit....
Word up.. (word up..)

It seems like he put it there so the listeners would know he was a gun, for me it takes away something from the song. Like it's less of a concept and more of a walk through.

Plus I've never liked long intro's anyway, once you've heard it once... anyway what do you think, do you like the intro on this song ?

I get you, I like it better when rappers are more subtle with concept songs Pac in Me and My girlfriend (even though it was obvious he was referring to his gun) and Kanye in (Home not Homecoming, home).

One of his best verses in storytelling wold have to be

Yo, in a mahogany, black scenery
That was lightin and rain drops
I'm tied up in the basement cocaine spot, like Bangkok
I'm blindfold
Vietnam type mind controless torture
His accent sounds like the rarest culture
Askin me, my astroby stabbin me gradually
Says its astrobute
What's atonic, mesonic, ironic
I felt reminded of my fast life ventures
And winters
Blinded til the flashlight enters

The way he desribes it is amazing.

Yeah thats what i was trying to say he wasn't subtle enough, it's like he didn't have faith that the rest of the song to depict that he was a gun.

I agree re: subtlety, but it's still a great song.

However, Kanye's "Homecoming" is no where NEAR the class of the Tupac and Nas songs mentioned here. Blasphemy to even mention Kanye's amongst these classics.

Of course no doubt it's a great song, but it could've been up their with some of the greats for me if it just came without the intro... but i guess i can just skip it.

It's still pretty obvious without the intro that he's a gun.

Haha Yeah "They call me Desert Eagle, semi-auto with lead " that pretty much gives it away.

Exactly. The first verse basically spells it out. "semi-auto with lead" - what could he be referring to?

The intro is annoying because, it tells the listener the concept, and the way he says it just sounds stupid as fuck.

The song as a whole is just unreal. On another level. It Was Written is a classic.

I think Rewind (and maybe Fetus) are the only Nas songs to come close to Gave You Power in terms of pulling off a genius concept.

Never really been a huge fan of Untitled - but yeah that's a well delivered concept and a very clever idea when looked in a wider context - but I don't think it quites touches the genius of the 3 above. I also hate the production - thought that whole album was over-produced.

Personally I like Untitled and think that's one of his better albums (yes I like it more than Stillmatic and IWW)

Great song. I don't like the intro, though. If it was split in half and then went into the song, would've been so much better. Like has been said, I like it better with concept songs like that when the artist doesn't give away the whole idea of the song.

We should create a thread about songs that have subtle meanings like that.

I've gone blank.

What are some other ones?

Wow.
