Seinfeld is totally overrated. I like it, and totally understand the love for it and its popularity. The focus on life's smaller detail, the neurotic obsessions etc...

But, as a huge Larry David fan, and a huge comedy fan, I'm quite annoyed by how ridicoulously overrated it is. The only thing which makes Seinfeld outstanding, and significantly different from other very standard sitcoms is the 'Larry David-isms'.

And they're done to much better effect on Curb Your Enrhusiasm. Curb, is absolute genius and>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Seinfeld. Curb is Seinfeld without network interferance, formatting and pandering.

And there are many better small, forgotten sitcoms that are funnier than Seinfeld. King of Queens and Two Guys and a Girl, to name two - both much more realistic and hilarious.

But nothing touches the sides of The Office (UK), Curb and Arrested Development.

Chet Starr wrote:King Of Queens is not much more realistic. Unless every fat guy really gets a hot wife that does nothing but bitch bitch bitch. While the fat guy does nothing but eat eat eat eat (great show tho, Jerry Stiller ftw)

I love the show, but when I think of King Of Queens, realism is no where in my mind.

Agree that Curb Your Enthusiasm is better, but I think only because it's simple not screwed with being on network television. They can tell the stories, Seinfeld can't tell.

Oh where as, George retrieving a golf ball from a whale is realistic

Seinfeld is very kooky with a lot of convoluted plots and characters. And a lot of bad acting.

Kevin James, and most of those characters are a lot more true to life than most Seinfeld characters. They speak and act more realistically, it's more believable.

Seinfeld is a more commendable comedy in conversation, its aims are themes are more comedically worthy and honed but, just in straight presentation and laughs King of Queens ethers it.

Also, Curb is better for SOOO many reasons other than the basic fact it's not on network television and isn't pandered or dumbed down. The structure of it, the constant character collisions, the hyper focus on Larry's self-righteous moral code and ethical logic etc. It's pure comedic art. Seinfeld is just a sitcom.

Embase, come on son :shakehead:

You know you laughed when George went back to the coffee shop and told his story about retrieving that golf ball ;)

"The sea was angry that day my friends...like an old man trying to send soup back at a deli"

And then Jerry's face after he says that...priceless.

As for acting, I mean george was great, Jerry was good for what he needed to do, and Kramer, well the shit he said was I don't even know, and the sounds he makes. I watched a behind the scenes thing on the dvd's at one point, and Jerry talked about intense Kramer was, when somebody laughed and ruined a shot he got really pissed. That gave me a great respect for Michael Richards :y:

I mean, realistically some of the shit was out there, but it's the subplot to it all. Like the whale thing you brought up, the whole jerry lying about george being a marine biologist is what led to that ending, and george talking on the phone about algea and plankton

Anyway, I think seinfeld is the greatest sitcom ever, it was even picked by tv guide (I know, frank costanza probably has it in his collection too :shifty: ) as the greatest show of all time.

Curb your enthusiasm is funny, but I only have cable, so I've only ever seen a handful, which were all good. It has a lot of dry humor, which I love, but the shit on seinfeld is so much more inyour face hilarious, with a lot of subtle jokes passing through episodes and seasons that make it great. For instance, and I'll end with this, the festivas episode was on tv and I watched it the other day. And I'll never forget when I first saw this episode, and kramer gets the call that they're off strike after 12 years, I remember laughing for literally 5 minutes after that, and his whole speech to Jerry "I didn't want you to know I was outta work...it's embarrasing". After seeing so many episodes and then to have kramer say that was just beyond funny to me. To each his own tho :smoking:

^ I wasn't saying it's unfunny man. I was simply responding to Chet who was saying it was more realistic than King of Queens. Which, it isn't lmao.

And, actually, no I don't find like... big plot-twists or ideas like that funny. Well, it's all about the execution but those parts of Seinfeld were cheesy to me.

The funniest things on Seinfeld were the 'Larry David-isms'. Such as the 'yada yada' etc.

It coined many phrases and the focus on conversational detail or neurotic tenancies are what made it different. All sitcoms can do kooky storytlines. But, like I said, all that stuff is done to much better effect on Curb and Curb is ALWAYS funny.

Seinfeld makes me smirk and sometimes chuckle. But aside from the underlying brilliance of some of the writing, there's also a lot of formatted rubbish, a lot of bad actors, lazy characters etc. Where as Curb makes me laugh out loud a lot, it's deeply hilarious and deeply noteworthy comedic brilliance. It's also bluntly realistic and harsh, making it all the more hilarious.

I know I was just messing around lol.

I think what makes Seinfeld better in one aspect is the way they use every character at times for the "main" plotline. I know I haven't seen enough Curb, but what I have seen it uses Larry David as the main character all the time and his interaction, dilemma, or whatever with other characters for the plot. Where Seinfeld will use one or two characters in their most used part of the show, which is often a combination of Jerry/George/Kramer or one of them three and Elaine. I like how they do so many different storylines and then seem to always tie it together at the end, which is great writing to me as well for a 20 minutes show and being able to tie them together.

Also, I love how they throw real life events into the show and put such a weird but hilarious twist on them. Like the Sunshine Carpet Cleaners being a cult, and having George's boss at the Yankees get brainwashed, and acts like that woman who was 'captured" and forced to rob the bank, and he acts out what she did with the vacuum as the gun, and saying his names now "tonya". Also, the JFK assassination being twisted into kramer and newman getting spit on at the mets game from the "gravely road"...or the mary hart's voice giving kramer seizures. All of them examples to me show how creative the team of writers are, as well make me crack the fuck up.

What is your favorite episode or funniest seinfeld moment? I'm curious :8)
