That doesn't mean they were ruined though, they were just influenced by IT a little more than others

They weren't ruined though, they had no chance to begin with

I just thought you were pretending to be like people that say all underground rap sucks because they talk about nonsense they don't know about and you were including IT in that because he's who they always bring up.

Nahh. I should have been less ambiguous throughout this discussion.

Yes, Lupe is overrated. Not in the media/mainstream's eye, but by other hiphop heads. It's like Eminem, for example. His first 3 albums were fucking amazing so now everyone (not literally) thinks if he farts on an instrumental it's a classic.

I can't get into 90% of what lupe does. Which is weird, really, because I love that style of intellectualism in music. Don't get me wrong, I ran through food & liquor more times than I can't count.. He just got boring to me. He sounds the same in every song without any form of variety as far as musicality is concerned.

As for IT... Lol. :facepalm2 I can't stand that shit. Not to mention he's so offbeat it's almost laughable.

Although that seems the general consesus of what the song is about, I always thought it was wayy too obvious.

Personally, I think it's about mainstream hip-hop with 'the box' being the hip hop you hear on MTV etc, with the first verse showing how people hate this rap ("really hates the box") but cant look away. With the second verse showing how because this terrible hip-hop is everywhere he cant get enough of it now and loves it.

Also, I remember reading somewhere, someone saying that the "combination" that is swallowed and forgetten is the aspects of rap that made it great in the first place. That adds to my theory.

As the doctors jot it all down, with they pens and pencils
The same ones that took away his voice
And just left this instrumental, like that

^That's the main reason why I think it is. With the 'doctors' being the A & R's at record labels and because of their influence in the music the lyrics have become relatively pointless ("took away his voice") and that it's just about the beat ("left this instrumental")

Of course I could be looking too much into it but I don't think Lupe would have made it as obvious as the television idea.

^That's sorts what I always thought it was. Like at least the part about him having his unique voice taken away.

I can put up with I.T.'s music a lot better than Lupe's. Lupe is a great rapper, but he has a bunch of songs I don't like... :smoking:

Never thought about it that way. Interesting, makes you see the song in a whole new light.
