Will there ever be a mianstream white rapper w/o a gimmick?

Postby FreeSpeech » Jan 19th, '11, 00:13

1st off, understand I'm not using gimmick as an insult or to say they did it just to sell. I'm just saying, all of the mainstream white rappers have had something that greatly seperates them from other rappers.

Asher Roth - The "college kid"
Eminem - The "psycho who is corrupting your children's minds"
Yelawolf - The "trailer trash skateboarder"
Vanilla Ice - The "comedy relief guy who makes us feel better about ourselves"

Paul Wall is really the only guy I can think of who didn't do anything to seperate himself from everyone else.

Some upcoming guys who are shooting for mainstream and who don't really have a "gimmick" include Mac Miller and Novi Novak.

Chris Webby, another upcoming guy, is the most gimmicky of all. If you know him, you know what I mean.

It's called a personality.

I know, and it's definately a good thing. I'm just wondering, will there ever be a more generic white rapper?

Novi Novak is really fucking generic. Mac Miller is pretty much a white Wiz Khalifa.

If more than 4 white rappers were allowed to be signed in the mainstream at once, then they won't stand out from each other as much.

That's why I listed those 2, I'm wondering if they will ever be able to make it big.

Nah, not wiggers, just more generic a la Drake's weaker stuff. I'm not wishing this to happen, I'm just speculating if it COULD happen.

I'm not saying they're faking it, that's why I don't like the word gimmick but I wasn't sure what else to use.

No white rapper will ever make it 'big' in the mainstream, and be a worldwide superstar. Em set the bar too high, and everyone else is instantly compared to him. Even the ones where there is a lot of hype/expectation, they always falls of the radar after a while. I mean, Asher Roth was supposed to be 'that guy' a few years back and what a flop he was. Yelawolf could make it, because he is signed to Eminem's label.

Doesn't every rapper have something that makes them different, including black rappers? It's not really a white thing, is it?

To a certain degree, but some rappers are just fairly generic.

But in order to be really recognized and enjoyed, I think you have to have something to set you apart, good or bad. To make it mainstream, you have to have that something that makes you different. Maybe a rapper on Youtube or something could be generic, but being mainstream almost requires that you have a distinct personality of some sort.

Just pretend Drake was white (yes I know he's half). Would he be where he is today? I like Drake, and it's not that he doesn't have personality, but he's just not THAT unique.

He has the whole "clean" gentleman look going for him.

True, IDK kinda a stupid/hard to define topic. Do you see what I'm getting at though?

Yeah, I understand what you're saying. There are definitely some generic things about him as a rapper. Still, I think Drake has that "swooner, sweet" type of thing going on to set him apart, even if just a little.
